Judy, sometimes doctors have age limits as their own preference. If Dr.B says no ask him for a referral to another surgeon who does do surgery on someone your age. He may have a bigger base of knowledge of other surgeons than you can find on line. Ask him too if his clinic would do your fills if you were to get it elsewhere. Did you get a chance to look into the nonsurgical balloons offered in Montreal for 3500 dollars..
If you put your faith in waiting you will only get older in the process and no healthier. That might be a safer option. The problem there though would be keeping it off once the balloon was gone. That's the same as RNY though. After 18 months , RNYers start to regain if they don't follow a sensible diet and watch what they eat. Same I suppose as lap banders. We can all regain.
I waited 5 years for my surgery. In the last year of waiting I decided I would never get done so I took matters into my own ands and dieted down from 293 to 251. If I had not gotten surgery I would have stayed the dieting course I suppose. I was fed up with waiting and wasn't getting any healthier. I think that may have gone a long way to convince Dr. B. to let me have RNY because he was convinced I was going to have lap band when I first saw him. I was just as positive I was not going to. I was also considering moving back home at the time. Home for me is Northern Canada. So I don;t know which or both led him to change his mind and allow me RNY. I am just glad he did because I was not getting a lap band.

Hello marymother & everyone else -
Thanks again for your words of wisdom.....I really do appreciate the feedback that you are all giving to me...any your experiences...and your suggestions!
Well, I just thought I'd give you a bit of an update as of this morning.
I called Dr B's office and spoke to Nathalie. She said that my file from Dr S hadn't arrived yet but to call back in a couple of days. When I asked about the "age thing", she said that the doctor doesn't do any "bypass" or "sleeve" surgery on anyone over 55. However, he does do the Lap Band surgery. She said that a lady over 70 from NS was approved to get it done a few months ago but she cancelled because it was too expensive for her. So, having said that, I guess I'm not "dead in the water" yet. :o))) She also said that she was now calling her 2007 people and I am in the 2008 group so I'm still cautiously optimistic. Have a great day!!!

On one side when its definitely true that the surgery could help you in numerous ways, it is to be strictly borne in mind that in case of diabetes patients, especially for aged ones the sort of complications that may arise are many and this is the reason the surgeon has told so and you should follow the same, otherwise you may risk your life.
