I think that the biggest risk comes from being diabetic at 68 years old. I think Dr B's cut off is 60. If that isn't enough bad news, The free flight to Mexico has a max amount that would only pay the flight from somewhere relatively close (i think they told me 500.00 was the max they allowed for flight. also if you go to Mexico for the band, an NB doctor will not touch you for fills etc. Sorry for all the bad news. I can just imagine you are very disappointed. another option that you could self pay is the new balloon in the stomach (not sure the real name). I believe it is a lot cheaper, with no surgery.

Thanks Kitty_mom -
As I had said, I haven't really gotten to the point of desperation that I would even consider Mexico...but as time goes on, who knows how desperate I'll get.  :o))  I could even use my Aeroplan points if I had to.....but you're right about the fills. That would be one of my main concerns.  Re: Gastric Balloon - I did see that procedure done on You tube - the patient was laying on her side on the operating table and they inserted a long tube of some kind down her throat with the balloon attached.  After checking that everything was in place, they started filling the balloon with a saline solution until it will filled to capacity.  From what I read, I think tht the only stipulation with that procedure is that the balloon HAS to be either removed or changed EVERY six months.  I think I saw it on Surgical Weight Loss Centre site(if anyone is interested).  it is another  consideration though....thanks again. have a great sunny day!

People do get lap bands in Mexico  and live elsewhere. If you were serious about getting one in Mexico though, I'd make absolutely sure to find someone here to do fills before you go to Mexico.  As Charline says, some doctors will not touch someone else's bands. My question is though, if you'd be willing to travel out of country for wls, why limit yourself to lap band ? There is the sleeve that people seem to do well with and does not seem to have the unpleasant side effects of RNY. I'm thinking if you had one of the bypasses, it would not require the maintance of a lap band. Any doctor could order your labs and any nutritionist could advise you on vitamins. I don't know if surgeons in other countries hae the same criteria with age.

When I was a student nurse I once saw a plastic surgeon do a face and neck lift on a 69 year old lady. Another surgeon was fixing her hammer toes and when he was done, the plastics guy did her lifts. She had been a widow for some years and had met a new man and wanted to look good.

Thanks again -
You make a good point about other options.  I guess I wasn't aware of all the different WLS procedures available out there.  I'll have to keep digging around on the computer for more info.  That's one of the reasons that I hooked up to this forum - I knew that many of you are 'pros' on these topics and I'd learn a lot about where to go and what to do.  Have a great day and I'm gratefully taking in everyone's feedback.

Yeah that's a great idea Judy. Do your homework and check out what is offered out there.Check out all of the surgery types. No one surgery is best for everyone.

Hi I know in my information session last summer there was a lady who was in her 60's and diabetic she was going to have the lap band. There did not seem to be a probel with her age. It just is wrong the purpose of htis surgey is to improve your health at 65, 70 or 90 it can reduce the cost on the health care system. I think if Dr Beau will not do it that you should be making a sepical requestot have the proceudre covered out of province.

Just a question.....where was your information session last summer???
These last few days have been VERY educational in regard to WLS....wow!  I've been looking at so many sites, my brain is on overload.  :o)  I looked in the U.S. at a few, also in Mexico.  There is a Dr Kuri whose office is in San Diego but he and his team operate out of Tijuana.  I went on his site and was quite impressed.  His site is:  www.lapbandsurgery.com if you're interested.  I filled out an information form and an hour later his nurse called me - we chatted and she answered some of my questions . The main problem of course was where to get the fills done.  She had a list of doctors in Canada who work in conjunction with Dr Kuri's clinic....BUT....they are mostly in the western provinces.  She didn't have any in the Maritimes who were on her list.  However, she said that she had had a patient fron NS who wanted to get the Lap Band surgery done and she asked him about getting his fills.  He told her that he had a paramedic friend in Halifax who was going to do them so I guess he did have the surgery through Dr Kuri.  I didn't enquire for any further details about it though.  I think I'll wait till after I speak with Dr B's office on Monday before  I proceed any further.  And Figler5, you are right.  If he refuses me also, I will ask both him and Dr S for a written report and contact Medicare to try to pursue it further.  I AIN"T GIVING UP!!!
Oh by the way, Dr Kuri's surgery is $7,000.00 U.S.  G'night for now.

It was in Moncton.: 0).   know that there is no RN tranined to do the fills outside of the clinics however I know that a few have had sugery in TORONTO and have fills in NS. If doc Beau says you are two old he maybe he will be able to work something out for your fills. I have a feeling he may not be as concerned with your age. You have alot of life left:)
