Hello -
I am new to your site and I am so happy to have found a group that can sympathize and might be able to give me some suggestions.  I won't bore you with the details...but..... after waiting nearly two years and finally getting "the phone call" for my referral last Monday, I was counting the days and minutes to my appointment.  My husband and close friends were so happy for me and  were saying prayers that everything would go well..plus...I had to drive four hours to Bathurst.  When he brought me in his office and closed the door, sat down and looked at me seriously and said that he could not and would not operate on me because I was too old (I am 68) and a diabetic.  He said that there could be so many complications, etc, etc.....  I left his office sobbing because I was so devastated...and still am.  I was looking forward to this surgery as a godsend to help me lose weight, give me energy, to hopefully decrease my diabetic medications and to just FEEL GOOD again.  He did say, however, that he would send a note to Dr B in Moncton and that MAYBE, he would be willing to operate, but not to get my hopes up too high.  I am so crushed.....but will not give up the fight... :o))  I'm so happy for all of you out there that are doing so well...congratulations!!!   Does anyone have any suggestions as to what and were I should go next?  I will wait until Monday and call Dr B in Moncton....just in case!  Thanks for listening - I'll appreciate all the help I can get.  ~ judy ~

Hi, Judy -
you must feel so disappointed!  I can understand!

Were you looking for the lapband surgery?  I'm not really sure what the cut off is, or what Dr. Beausoleil's cut off age is...maybe Dr. B patients can pipe in??

All the best to you, Judy.   :)

Oh my I am so sorry this happened to you.  I know the feeling.  I waited 5 years to see Dr. Beau only for him to tell me that at the age of 55 I was too old to have RNY. He did do Lap Band on me though.

I am not sure if Dr. Beau has a cut off for surgery in general.  I do know he does not want to put anyone in peril.  He is an excellent physician and his patients safety is uppermost in his mind.

Is there someone else out there - Kitty do you know - you are always a wealth of information  -who might know if Dr. Beau has a cut off for LapBand as well?

I hope you get some answers Judy.  One other option is to self pay and go to Quebec to Dr. Christou but perhaps he has a cut off as well.

Hope you get the answers you need.  I wish you well.

Thanks  to all -
Yes it is Lap Band that I planning to get.
All the 'out of province' doctors and clinics that I checked charge an average of $15,000.00.
Unless I win the 649 lotto, I wouldn't be able to get it done.
Does anyone know of any cheaper places?
I was also looking at a clinic in Puero Vallarta run by a Dr Joya....I didn't look into it very deeply yet because I'm hoping for a miracle here in NB... :o))  Anyway, apparently Dr Joya charges $8,000.00 includes flight, surgery, accommodations, etc.
I went to see my GP today and explained the whole thing to her.  She said that she should get a full report from Dr Savoie and will let me know when it comes in so we can go over it together.
Thanks again ladies - your help is much appreciated.

Thanks Marymother -
I sure hope that Dr B has better words for me too.
Yes, I had read that in the US there are doctors who perform Lap Band on seniors...but....I believe they extend the 'pre-op' and 'post-op' periods and monitor very closely to make sure that the patient is keeping in stable condition.
The reason I want to get it done in NB is that it is covered but going anyway else costs a ton of money which, unfortunately;, I just don't have.....just have to keep my fingers crossed.
I'll let you know if I get any new news after my conversation on Monday...say a prayer y'all !
I'm looking at your statistics and I am overwhelmed by your progress!
You must be one of the happiest people in the world!
A thousand Congratulations are going your way - what a fantastic job!!!

Thank you Judy. I saw my endocrinologist and his team today and although I am quite pleased with my weight loss, I don't think they are. If I never lost another pound, I'd be happy as a pig in poop but they seem to think I can do more. Oh my. Guess I will have to try harder.

But to answer you question....YES I AM PIG HAPPY. I can reach my toes, my butt and my back to scratch or whatever. LOL For the first time in 20+ years this past week I actually put a plate on my lap and ate my lunch. If I never lost another ounce, I'd be just as happy with myself a year from now. As long as I can remember where I started, I'll be fine.

We will keep our fingers, toes and eyes crossed for you. Diabetes sucks at any age.

I wonder if Charline (Kitty mom) means a stomaphyx?

No I don't mean a StomaphX. This simply terms a balloon they put in you unaltered stomach and fill with Saline. All it does is take up space, but I would think that you would not have many of the issues WLS patients have, but you probably have other issues. I would have to ask, what happens when you have lost the weight....how are you going to keep it off?

Wasn't that a big thing way back in the late 70's early 80's. I remember the balloon well. I can't remember what the issue was with it. There was something though. I remember because I wanted one. Have they re-introduced it? That would be great if it worked. Just think, no surgery. Back then, once you lost weight they just drained the saline, removed the balloon  and off you went. Maybe that's one of the reasons it did not work.

There must be something different about this balloon, because  it is anew procedure.
