While the good news is my blood pressure whic has been running high is now approaching normal with just 25 pounds off , good diet and walking. The bad news is I have been experinceing changes in my moods I have been on an antidepressent since I was disgnosed with post pardum depression about 5  years . I have never had to have it increased once we got to the right dose but now my doc thinks increasing it is not a bad idea. I am wondering if anyone else has had this happen? I am a nurse so I always try to figure out the why in my medcial issues and thought that since my carbs are reduced alot lately so would the rushes of sertonin that you get from a big carb meal. ANy one else have any thoughts or any science to back me up :).

I can’t help you on the anti depressant front, because I normally only take 6 month treatments and haven’t on any it’s been a few years. I can tell you that early in my journey, I was very moody and depressed. I recall sitting in front of the television crying. I was a food addict, so losing my “drug" was very hard on me emotionally. It took me about two months to really feel normal again. I think you are right about the carbs, because before surgery I went from eating more carbs than my body could handle to barely eating them at all. I have not touched pasta or bread since surgery so maybe that’s why the first 2 months we’re rough for me, major carb withdrawal. Also, I was a Pepsi drinker and I stopped cold turkey during my liquid diet. All in all, it was big adjustment for me and I was down for a few months. Eventually I begun feeling great, even better than I did before surgery!

I suggest that along with your doctor’s advice; do what’s right for you J

Good luck!

I have a history of depression. I take Effexor, Wellbutrin, and Terazadone- excuse the spelling. i have gone through a few bouts since my surgery. I went through a very bad patch around Christmas and am waiting to see Jayram to review my meds. I(f it is any help, weight loss is supposed to cure depression in a high % of cases.

Here's hoping I lost a son 12 years ago and then had some diffulcty having my son who is 10 after which I went into a funk at the time the pyscholoist labeled it post tramatic stress . I refused to take meds  being the stupid helathcare professional I was and did not really get as well as I should have. When I got pregant with my son 5 I was rediagnosed as having suffered post pardum depression and started on celexa first as it was safe to take when pregant after he was born though through the first year I was tried on a bunch of different meds and eventually settled on Effexor which has stayed the same for 4 years. My doc increased it for teh next three months yesterday to see if that can get me through this adjustment period.

I am hoping to be able to get off my thyroid medication as well but we will see. It is amazing how comfortable I feel sharing this info on this website  it is  a relief to actually find real women and men who are going through thesame things that others do not understand.

I was also hoping to get off my thyroid meds. I saw my doctor yesterday and he said that once you are on thyroid medication you are usually there for life :-(  Go news is I got off my B.P. pills and my cholesterol is normal.  yipee!

Quite dramatic mood swings were the norm for me post-op. Not as frequent now - I think i can attribute most of it to my RNY and changing body. And the rest to me just being me and being 48yrs old. From all the postings I have read here on OH over the years - moods swings are VERY common. So don't sweat it too much and explain what is going on to those close to you. Take care!

Let's face it girls, most of us have self medicated with food for most of our adult life. It has been our primary coping mechanism for most stress. It would be silly to think that we can just change that over night (when we had surgery) and not have mood swings, a bit of depression....or a lot if depression is already a problem....and anxiety would just have to be on the menu too!!  I am still hoping that I will overcome depression when the weight is gone, but I didn't expect  in the short term.

So true:) I have actually been feeling incredible this week , I have been getting up and starting my day with excercise and having a tall drink of ice water LOL and eating breakfast at work. I have asked my hubby to hise my bathroom scale and only let me use it once a week.
