Lap Band Leaks: What You Should Know

Excellent and very informative post. Very timely also because a few people have had issue with their bands. I had never really thought about all the potential problems with the band - simply because I don't have one. Not that I wouldn't have = but Newfoundland Provincial Health Care Insurance does not pay for the band surgery or any costs associated with it. Couple that with the $, time and travel that would be involved for fills - just not an option for me. There are good and bad points with ALL these WLS - none of them are easy - and they all carry potential risks and complications. Kudos to you bandsters from me also. I think that unless my port was well felt and defined - I would be insisting on fills under fluro. Why risk damaging the band/tubing/port needlessly? It doesn't make sense. I know it may be more costly - but in the long run - probably not - as needless complications and problems could be avoided. Just my thoughts. Take care!

Excellent post Charline,

Most appreciated.  I am concerned that they don't do every fill under floro but they have their reasons and I have to trust that Dr. Beau knows what he is doing.  All that being said - I will not be letting unexperienced people do a fill for me ever again.  I will insist that it be either Dr. Beau, Dr. Roy or in a pinch Lise - that is it.

Until I get restriction or until I find out why I can't get restriction - I am going to be very proactive with this.

Thanks again Charline, you're the best.

Hi,

Yes, be proactive.  I have just spent the last 3 months with no restriction.  I kept telling them at the office that something was wrong. Two weeks ago I was insulted by one of the PA's telling me that I just wasn't working hard enough to lose weight.   I have had my band for over 2 years with great results and suddenly no restriction and I am able to eat what ever I want....puhleeze!
I am a food addict.

Finally today the PA admits that the 4cc's that was put in the last visit had vanished I was sent to schedule a port revision.

Yes it is my fault I have gained 20 pounds in 3 months because I put the food in my mouth but it is NOT my fault this thing has a leak.  My question is who pays?

BTW in the last three months I was sent for an xray and a barium swallow test....to prove what?  That the band hadn't dissapeared?  I even think the PA lied at the appt two weeks ago telling me there was 3cc's in my port because why would he add 4cc's to 3 cc's?

I am angry .... thanks for allowing me to vent.

Today is a gift that's why it's called the present.

Hi

Did you eventually get your band fixed? Did your insr. pay for it or did you self-pay?

I'm asking because I had a similar horrible experience in which my dr even asked me if I tried to fill it myself (because I wasn't in to see him every couple months). I told him no... I came in the last few times and I was told it was my eating habits and I was sent to the dietician - but I knew that I had no restriction and they weren't really listening. Finally after finding nothing in the band, then having a flouroscopy done, the dr saw that there was a leak farther up by the connection - but my insr. wouldn't cover anything related to fixing it. The hospital charges are estimated at 7,000+ and I don't really think that it's fair - especially when the dr. says it will take 15-20 minutes to fix.

sorry... venting.  I just really wanted to know if you had to pay for it out of pocket.
