I used to belong to Good Life and really liked it until my back stopped me from going. One of the gyms here is women only but I don't know if there are others. Some gyms like Good Life will give you a week membership for free to check them out. You just have to humm & haww at their sales pitch. Others will allow you to buy a one time or book of passes. It is best to try them before buying because it is an expensive purchase...plus if you aren't comfortable, you will avoid going.
I did Curves for a while - liked it a lot but after a while it got boring. No variety - same circuit very time unless they go left to right every other day. But if you are looking to "get started" and do something low impact for the first little bit it would be a great option. Then once you start feeling stronger you could look into something else.
