Do I have a chance?

According to my doctor, I have been placed on the waitlist for both Dr. B and Dr. Savoie (both referrals sent early last year). I have heard nothing from either office.

I am only 28 and am not on any medication related to my weight (other than depressions meds) but I have well over 120 pounds to lose and have a BMI in the mid 40s (I have tried losing weight myself, even working with a Personal Trainer but it doesn't seem to work). I also have a family history of basically everything - high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, cancer, arthritis, etc.

I have read the forums about wait times etc. Do any of you think I even have a chance of having surgery since I am not on any meds or have any immediate health problems? Or am I one of those lucky people who gets to wait 5-10 years for help?

All opinions welcome! Thanks.

Most definitely! I thought Dr S just started taking referrals last September? I'd say your chances of getting in to him are much more likely that getting in to Dr B.

Wishing you all the best!

It is all about your BMI if it is over 40 I think that is what it is you can have it done.Iam 28 also and have 100bls to loss,You should call the offices of both Dr and see if you are on the list,As I was sent to Dr S in sept and seen him in Oct then had the lap Band on Aug 19th,I hope this helps you.

Sorry - you are right. My referral to Dr. B went in early last year and my referral to Dr. Savoie would have been in the Fall. I have an appointment with my general doctor next Monday so I guess I'll just ask her if there is anything she can do to find out where I am on the list. I just honestly don't think I can wait 5 years like some of these stories I've read. It's not that I'm impatient, I just see my health deteriorating and me ending up on meds....

You won't have to wait 5 years for Dr S by the sounds of things. And if you really can't wait? Self pay is always an option. I have a friend who had it done in Ontario within 2 months of her decision to have surgery. It cost her $16,000 at the time *BUT* I think she found out later than Medicare would cover it. I would check with the goverment on that and see. Don't give up before you've tried!

You bet you have a chance....just make sure that Dr S's
office has your referral.  Faxes or letters  have a way

of being misplaced so for peace of mind, I'd certainly call

their office.  If you didn't have a chance, your dr

probably would not have made the referral.  And you may

develop all those lovely co morbidities as you age so it's

great to get the bull by the horn now to prevent any

damage to your body!!!  Good luck!!  And don't be shy

about calling ......your taxes are paying their wages!!!!

Keep in touch!!!

Thanks for the support. I guess I'll be getting on the phone and making sure Dr. Savoie has my referral and I'll talk to my doc next week to see if she can do anything. Fingers crossed!

I'm glad I found this place. It's nice to have the input from people who have "been there"!

Yes, you have a chance. Just make sure to follow-up with phone calls to make sure the referrals got where they needed to go. I waited 3 yrs - but I think Dr.S. is getting patients done fairly promptly from what I see on this board. Good luck - and whatever the wait - it will be well worth it!
