Consent signed...

Went on the 4th of Sep to sign my consent...RNY...wasn't sure if Dr B would do it, the nurse didn't seem to think so, implied I didn't have much weight to lose...whatever that means...??
At 250 lbs, with a goal weight of 150, seems like a lot to me!!  Maybe its because I carry it so well, that people don't see me as being the weight that I am.  I sure see it!  And feel it everyday!

When I booked the appt, the lady on the phone said it would still be 3-4 months before surgery, as due to the summer hours in the OR, he got a bit behind, tho when I spoke to him, he said 1-2 months...

Hoping he is the correct one!!  LOL

Cheers!

Congrats on consent signing. I had rny last feb. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.Nsgalliving by the sea had rny too. She's very helpful and she will answer any questions too. She is further out than I am but either way, we are here if you have questions. Did Dr.B confirm thatyou will be having rny?  How long have you been waiting to see Dr. B? Have the waiting lists gotten any shorter?

Usually to qualify for  rny( by Dr.B's qualifications criteria)  you need to lose at least 100 pounds to attain a bmi of 30. At my first consullt with Dr. B I weighed 274. At 5'3" for me to reach a bmi of 30 I need to weigh 160 pounds. That sounds really heavy to me and according to the life insurance companies, I should only weigh 130 pounds at the most but it's not about looks or even our desires, it's about bmi.

Hi Laura  - congrats on signing!!

Is RNY your personal choice? I started at 270 lbs and lost 120 by my one year anniversary date with lapband. I understand what they are saying but what's important is that you are getting the surgery that YOU want.

At first, I thought I had my heart set on the lap band...but after the info session in August, and the realization that I need to stay local (well, maritimes at least) for fills, ect, or any problems, that posed an issue for me.
We are likely to be posted overseas in about 3 years...once I explained that, he was in definate agreement that RNY was the better choice.  I understand the risks are greater, but I'm hoping that because I'm an active fat person (yes, thats what I said...LOL) and my ablility to come through things like this with flying colors, that my luck will continue with this.  I will stay positive and optimistic.
My BMI is currently 40.  My highest weight was 293, I'm now hovering around 250.  Yo-yo is what I do...
And I was initally referred to Dr B back in 2004, when my weight was at its highest.  Only got a call this year, which seems typical, tho I'm told he is seeing many more patients today than he could when he first started out doing this surgery.
And I'm only telling close family what I'm having done.  To me, its nobody else's business except my own...my sister already tried to talk me out of it, telling me to just "diet" for a few months first...LOL...dieting is what I've been doing for years, but I always get hungry, and start eating again.
This time next year, I will be well on the way to a new, healthier me...

Hugs all!!

HI, just wondering if you have heard news yet when your surgery will be. I too have Dr.B and signed my consent form on Sept 16th, but havent heard anything since. Now that I know that it is supposedly close, am so impatient to hear when. How are you doing? I am having the lapband.

Hi Sandralila...I've been so busy lately!!  My apolgies for not getting back sooner, my hubby is military and away for a year, so not only am I working full time, single moming it for time being, selling avon AND a leader in my local Girl Guide unit...wow.  I feel like I should be wearing a cape or something!!
I have not yet heard anything ref my surgery, but I may have hit a snag with mine, My BMI recently dropped to 39.8 and my health provider (which is not NB medicare) is conflicting with signing the approval.  Dr B wants to use my medicare (which is still active, but not used very much at all) and I don't need to be accused of fraud or anything silly like that.  My Dr had orig agreed, referred me, and stated my case to the guys that hold the purse strings, and stated I was approved.  But then the next guy to come in, reversed the decision.  I'm waiting on the status of that so I can send it through to Dr B.  To have come this far...!!!  Its very frustrating.  I hope they come to a decision soon!
I hope you get your call soon!!  I can relate on whole impatient thing...

Laura  :)

It IS all about your BMI - and co- morbidities. Do what is right for you - I hear you about the need for fills - I live in Newfoundland - and that's one of the reason's I chose the RNY - apart from the fact Newfoundland Health Insurance doesn't cover the band. With a possible overseas move in your future - RNY is probably the wiser choice. Don't be swayed by others though - do what is right for YOU and what YOU are confident is for you! Good Luck!
