Emergency Surgery August 15th
Hi Mary,
I have been on this board for a bit but this is my first post. I am really glad that you were able to get the help you needed to correct the problem and am sorry that you had to go through that. You bring to the surface the fear that a lot of people deny. I'm really glad that you are going to be ok and I wish you a smooth sail from here.

Mary I am so glad you are ok.
Just wondering I have read about the "Petersons Hernia" not sure if I know tell tale symptoms but will have to read up on it - is that the the same complication that Jupiter (Shari) on the main RNY board had as her major complication - seems to come to mind that what she referred to it as being -
What were your signs/symptoms that post op RNY 's should be aware of.You mention abdominal pain - where - was it only after you ate - were you constipated or diarrhea with it - just would like to to know if there are any tell tale signs.
I am battling gall bladder stuff and I never had anything happen gall bladder related in my life pre-op but as can happen after losing a lot of weight quickly - I now need to have it out - they operate on Sept 10th- I am just hoping they can do it lapascopically vs open- the surgeon said he wont know till he gets in there and see's if I have adhesions from my RNY which was lap - the only other tummy surgery I have had was a c-section - crossing fingers it makes so much difference in recovery.
Well my dear you have been there and back - I hope all this is behind you and much healthier days ahead - thank god you had the good sense to go to Moncton for Dr B to be involved -
I am in Halifax and had surgery done in Montreal but have been told that now that there is a WLS team in Halifax should there be any complications they would be able to consult and know how my innards are all plumbed - if anything was too funky I think I would be like you though and get my butt to Montreal for Dr Christou to be involved.
So glad to read you are ok - take it easy -

Hi Deb - Yes - I had the same complication Shari had - if you want to check the main RNY board - there is a post by me where Shari replied with some very good info and advice about this complication. The SEVERE mid abdominal pain was the worst - I never had expereinced any pain that bad. I just paced the house for hours hoping it would settle. I have had a c-section - fractured/dislocated ankle with plates and screws/and of course my RNY - NONE of this caused me anything close to the pain level I had with this recent problem. I never vomited - but was so bloated - especially upper abdomen. And the back pain - mid back area - was also pretty extreme. You see - it's the stomach remnant and part of the small bowel that get all caught up with this hernia. So I was still able to take fluids and still passed gas now and then and was having small BM's. Because my new tummy was ok. When I finally had my CT - the doc told me that my remnant stomach was blown up similar to a foot ball with twisted small bowel which was dilated as well. The old stomach being where it is - that's why I had so much back pain and upper abdominal bloating. It was a nightmare - I'm still not relaxed and don't think I'll get over this mentally for a long time. As Shari said- I'll call it "What I did this summer" Long story short - Listen to your body and if something isn't right - don't give up until you get fixed. Thanks for caring and you take care also!
Hi Happygirl
I am not a nurse or dr- just a customer! lol
I have been told with any previous abdominal surgery there is always a chance of scaring or adhesions - I believe it is less chance with previous surgeries being lap- the surgeon told me he wont know till he tries to go in - and of course his choice is lap but if he had too - he would open me up! Uggghhhhh
I am sure your surgeon will discuss this with you - even when they plan to do lap surgery there is always a chance they might have to go open - its just one of those things about this surgery you go into knowing - but its really the same with any lap abdominal surgery - it could always get reverted to open.
I am more stressed about this surgery than I was my RNY last year not sure why but I am really panicked about it - just cant wait for it to be over and keeping my fingers crossed it will be lap.
