I'm afraid to forget to ask when they call.  Can we have gel nails for surgery.  Hands and toes?

Wow, I am not sure about WLS but in regular surgery, they have to see your nail beds so they can read your oxygen levels. I know they have gadgets for that but I had my gall bladder removed last summer and I had to have no nail polish. Good question though!

OMG Carmen thank god you mentioned Gall Bladder and Rachel posted about nails - I forgot I have gel toes now along with nails - I just did them this summer - note to self get gel toe nails removed before surgery!

Rachel vain as I am - I gave them a thumb and two fingers last summer - I talked to a few nurses and they said they can use the toes for the color/oxygen thing so I was only giving up a few finger nails cause I knew it would be while before I could get them replaced......... my gall bladder sugery is on Sept 10th so I will give up my toenails !

My surgeons receptionist told me to take them all off last year - I asked around and found out that it wasnt totally necessary- when I got to the hospital I just made sure I had them put it on my file.

Having worked both in the O.R and a surgical floor I know the rage surgeons and anestistists get into when they find nail polish, fake nails but back then there were no gel nails.

Yes, you can leave your toe nails clear but all of the people working on you are from your belly to your head. To do a quick check, we just glance at the fingers the way you might glance at your rear view mirror. Once ever so often someone will reach out and squeese a nailbed just to check.

I suppose if you used clear poli**** may not be a problem. I'd ask if I were you. Every hosp and doc have different requirements.

thank you girls.  to be safe, i won't get them refilled next time.   I'll just ask her to do a manicure and pedicure and i'll avoid any "rage" while I'm under the knife

Hi Rachel,

Did you get your date yet woman?

I’m not sure about Gel nails, but I don’t think so because the night before my surgery they told me to remove all my nail polish, from my fingers to my toes!

I usually get Gels too, but I haven’t for awhile because I was waiting for surgery and I didn’t want to waste the money, plus removing them before time hurts!!! Haha

No date yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   It should be soon.  The last time I called she said that I was marked down for August or September.

I think you're right, for the sake of saving money and to be safe, I'm slowly going to let them grow out and have a manucure instead.

Hi Rachel,

I will be leaving tomorrow for Ontario for a week but will be back by Sept 2.  I hope you get your call soon.  I was worried I would be away for your surgery date.  Email me privately at my home email - I think you have it - as soon as you get your date.

Best not to have gels or polish for surgery.  I used to have gels before I developed an allergy to them and had surgery and they asked me not to have them for surgery.  Be on the safe side and ask.

Ann
