STEP UP -VSG'ers
Ok, to all you VSG'ers who have had surgery, time to "tell all". There is an excellent post regarding pain but mostly "bandsters" replied. Us VSG'ers need to know about pain, exercise, restriction too! Come on, please share all that you can to us newbies who have yet to recieve this wonderful tool. One thing I would like to know is: WHERE DID YOU SLEEP THE FIRST FEW DAYS, ON A RECLINER OR A TRADITIONAL BED! I am going for my surgery withing a month or so (hopefully) so I really need all the dirt you can muster. PLEASE. Sometime I am just too curious for my own good. hehehe

I sleep in my bed But it was hard getting in and out,On the recliner was nices to watch TV,But I could never sleep there so IO went to bed. Go to the bathroom befor you get into bed as like I said getting in and out is hard.Don't bend down as that is hard too. Were things that are easy to get on and off.I don't even have my bra on as that is were they cut you.
I found now the 2 weeks after is going to be hard.Iam on day 3 day it was harder then the 2 weeks befor.I have soup for lunch but have back pain and chest pain.Iam taking Gas X that are helping me so get some of them.
drink alot of water that helps also. You will be good take day by day.
Also don't get up too fast take your time..

I hate sending our regulars to other forums but I think the depth of VSG experience here is kind of shallow. I suggest that you go to the VSG forum ((Go to forums @the top of this page, go down the drop down menu to surgical procedures and over & down to VSG). You will get tons of answers in no time at all.
Hi Sugarbear,
It's been a very busy summer for me so I haven't been checking in as often. I had VSG on June 8, 2008 and a hernia repair and required no pain medication. I was out and about driving within 5 days. I was really careful about lifting etc. I slept in my own bed and had no problems. The most I can say is there was some tenderness but no acute or constant pain at all. I've had toothaches that bothered me more than this surgery. I can remember having pain when my gallbladder was removed but that was a full incision. Apparently the laporoscopic method, 5 or 6 little holes, really make a difference for pain and recovery. I'm down 46 lbs and feel great. I'm eating most types of foods, still not doing a lot of raw crunchy vegetables and that seems really hard for me to digest and beef's texture also seems tough for me.
I hope this helps. Good luck,
Sandra (oneluckygirl)

So Sandra, you one of the patients on his first cycle of surgeries. Is Dr. E. a nice man? I see him on Sept 3 and I hope he thinks I am worthy. I am having my pre-ops in the afternoon as Diane said I was coming from so far away. At least that sounds promising. How much weight did you loose before surgery? The want me to loose 20 but I did loose 10. I still have some time to go. I get my surgery date on Sept 3 when I go in. I love raw veggies so I hope I can eat them at least in small amounts if nothing else. Veggies are my favorite food. Can you drink alot of water now? That is something I am working on. I drink water when I am thirsty but I know by then it is too late. Any and all information you can give me will be greatly appreciated. I need to loose 92 lbs. I am 5 feet tall. I would love to even get down to 140. Right now I weigh 215. I even dream of my future as a healthy, energetic. slim woman who can walk forever and not tire, who can eat what I need to live and not live to eat. I hope my dreams come true. Thanks for your imput and please keep in touch.

Hi Carmen,
Dr. Ellsmere is really nice, pretty thorough and no nonsense. I lost 15 lbs before surgery, the liquid diet before surgery really helps to lose that weight. Dr. E. told me it was really good that I had lost that much weight as it made the surgery technically easier for him to get to my stomach behind my liver. He went so far to say that if I had not lost that much weight he might have had to stop the surgery and reschedule when I was smaller. Please remember that is me not you. I weighed 286 at surgery. I want to lose 150 lbs. so I understand where you are coming from. As for the raw veggies, I can eat salad and peppers as they have a softer texture, it's more the carrots and celery that give me some grief. As for being worthy, you are already worthy or they wouldn't be scheduling you for surgery. One great thing I did for myself was to see my own therapist for several weeks. I really wanted to get into a good place mentally and it was really helpful to understand where my self destructive behaviour initially started. As for the gym. I still have problems with exercise. I was using the treadmill but it really hurts my knees so I am back to swimming 5 days a week. I could not swim for at least 6 weeks after surgery, initially the staples had to some out, then I had an infection at the hernia site....still all is well now. I hope that helps. This tool really has been a life saving gift. I feel like Charlie in Willie Wonka, I've won the golden ticket......good luck and keep in touch.
