3 years out for this DSer - life is good, wee weight gain and low on the zink
Hi,
To help those going down the DS path, or considering the DS path I thought I would document this time in my DS life.
I hit the 3 year mark on June 8th (or 9th as I always forget :)
I don't weight myself much. In fact during the month I am in Canada (every other month) I don't even own scales. So, when I dug out my summer clothes in May/June I found a few things tight which I wore comfortably last summer.
I checked the scales and figure I saw that I was up about 10 pounds. It would have creaped on over the last say 6 months I expect. With the summer clothes telling the real tale. I immediately dropped my peanut butter cups and reduced sugar drastically. Watching it in my yogurt and really looking into where I was getting sugar. Something that I had no****ched very closely in the last 3 years.
I also dropped my carbs, so cut out some of the potato chips at night, and cut down my little potato to a half potato, and generally looked to reduce on the carb front.
But after about 6 weeks, no difference.
You know...as a DSer this is a challenging time. We don't actually have many ways to reduce our weight with food. We should not cut down on the protein, we are not to count calories and get caught up with fats. We have to use a whole new set of "Diet" rules. That actually are not diet rules by anyones defination.
So...I started to pull out the big gun...exercies. For those that know me, I don't actually do any much for daily exercise, although I procrastonate often about it and swim from time to time.
I started daily 3 weeks ago on my treadmill. I guess it is not a treadmill, but a "elliptical trainer". You will need to google this if you are not sure what it is. But apparently it is less wear and tear on the joints. It was a gift to me, so this is what I pulled out of the closet a few weeks ago.
and...low and behold..after 6 weeks of not budging the scales, a few mere days of running on this elliptical trainer saw my weight start to drop.
I do 1 min at my own pace, then 1 min as fast as I can, then 1 at my own pace and so on, for 15 min.
I would say after 3 weeks I am down 6 pounds and really finding it amazing how much I have improved in what I can do in this 3 weeks. I can go longer and faster for sure.
Lets see how it goes, I will continue for a couple more weeks, then head to Canada where I don't have a machine.
So DSers....don't underestimate what exer**** can do and if you do not reach the weight you want in your 2 year window...I suggest you really hit the exercise hard.
Another thing I learned on the DS sites, is that very very often after 2 to 3 years it is a high portion of DSers who gain back about 10 to 20 pounds then stabalize. So, in hindsight...I wish I had of gone a bit under my dream weight to allow for a bit of a gain, because to gain 10 pounds did put me above where I comfortably want to be.
I was lazy about exercise because I lost so quickly and to where I wanted to be. And I hope you can learn from me, and if you don't get to where you want to be...hit the bike, the treadmill or the gym..but get there in your 2 year window.
Anyway, after a mere 3 weeks I have every confidence that if I continue the exercise, I have found a way to work with my DS to reduce my little winter gain. This is a really good feeling, because back a few weeks ago...I was really sort of...gee...one can not control a DS with food. I could not reduce my food or my proteins..so if I had already cut out carbs, sugars...now what?
guess the now what...was exercise...and is working a charm.
Hope this helps...any questions bring them on.

ps. will touch on the low Vit D and Zink another post. It will help thos searching down the road to see how this works and is resolved.
