Plastics

Hey everyone....I think there are many of you out there that are very close to the end of your weight loss journey, and ""MAY"" need plastic surgery to remove some excess skin.  Does anyone know if that is covered in either NB or NS...or Canada for that matter??

My sister had plastics after loosing 150ish pounds, but it was recommended that she wait or maintain for a year before OHIP would pay for it.  AND she had to have complications based on her bypass surgery. Her complication was that her excess skin was causing her good skin to break down in the folds and she got alot of open sores.  Sounds grosse I know. But they removed 30 lbs of extra skin off her abdomen.  It was donated to the hospital for grafting for burns and such.  That is about all I know. Don't know a thing about Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Sorry.,  Good luck on your search for information.

NB will pay for a tummy tuck if you have lost 100 pounds and the excess skin is causing some kind of problem for you. Apparently a proper tummy tuck is 2 procedures, but NB only pays for one of them.  Some plastic surgeons will onbly do a complete tummy tuck and they have been sucessful in getting the province to pay for it all.

If I lose 100 pounds, I will have problems...even if it takes sand paper!! LOL

Hi Amary

I guess that is the point I have reached... but my surgeon does strongly suggest you do not have any platics surgery until at least 18 months - when I last spoke with his office - they consider that I have reached goal - despite that -I think that I have more to lose- and this last 15 lbs or so is not xtra skin ???

Anyway they told me in May that I should wait 18-24 months before plastics and a plastic surgeon would tell me that I have to maintain my weight for about 6 months....... I have a feeling that I have gone into maintenance already as I am staying the same weight basically and not losing anymore just inches as my clothes are baggy again!

I believe that a pani removal is covered my MSI(NS healthcare system) in NS but not a tummy tuck. And.... only if it is documented like Carmen mentioned - it has to be causing issues... and with my luck - NOT - with MSI paying for anything - I doubt anything would be covered - they never gave me a dime for my WLS- so I am saving and will be headed to Ontario I think for my plastics.

I like that there are quite a few surgeons to choose from up in that end of the world that are very experienced in body conturing post WLS- I will need a lower body lift I believe to get rid of the excess skin and there is a lot of evidence showing lipo-suction should be done as well at the same time- I am doing my research and talking to people on OH in Ontario and the states to discuss what they have had done.

The next step will be to book some consultations with a few plastic surgeons .

I also think that if I was to pursue this avenue I would have the girls picked up off the floor and put somewheres back up in the top half of my body- I dont so much want any enhancement just not long empty tube socks - deflated hanging 95 year old looking boobs! lol - sorry just had to give you the visual! Anyway I dont think I would be doing this at the same time as a lowerbody lift but the girls do need help - bigtime!

I have a lot of excess skin on my upper arms - I dont go sleeveless or short sleeves - I think I am more self conscious about my arms then tummy at times - even though there is way more skin to deal with on my stomach- the surgery to have the excess skin on your upper arm done -  a brachioplasty- I am not sure if I will be doing this or not - have seen some good results - but also a lot of not so great results- again doing the research.

So this is a whole new phase- never thought I would want plastics so bad- thought I would lose the weight and as long as I was healthy who cares but the hanging skin plays games with your head and is difficult to clothe at times - pants are very difficult.

On good days I think I am focused and marching forward and doing my research and want to start contacting surgeons about consultations etc. and take the next step or know what I am working with - what they say - have I lost enough- is the rest really excess skin ??

Then on my bad days or the days when I have really poor self esteem- I think why would I go through all this PAIN-why waste all this money I am not 25 - its risky and is this necessary but I think my panni has something to do with my back pain and I am not looking forward to the rashes due to heat and sweating like so many have- I actually got a bad one when I was in Arizona in march -under the hanging boob issue- was worse than any I had when I was heavy/obese- not fun !!

So step by step day by day with my jiggly/wobbly bits!

I will keep ya posted on my adventure! lol

hugs

I plan on getting plastic for my tummy once I have lost all my weight because I know it will cause me problems. I have a really big buddah belly...that's where I carry all of my weight so I know I will have a big big apron.
