DS with Dr. Savoie---Update inside!!
Ok...
So I went to Bathurst on Sunday. Stayed at the Lakeview Inns....Rate was 90 bucks/night, and a 100 dollar deposit, as I didn't have a credit card. The motel was clean/service was great/continental breakfast was good. I would definately stay there again.
On Monday, Check out time was 12....so we stayed right up to the minute, then headed to the hosp....Got there way early for my 130 appt....but the good thing was that ScarTears(I got to meet her--her picture does not lie, she is a very pretty young lady) was there, with the nurse, so the nutritionist took me in, then I saw the nurse, and right after saw Dr. Savoie.
Here is the scoop.....
I am writing from memory, so please don't take this as the Dr's exact words.
He is doing LapBands first
He is doing easy cases(low health issues) first, to allow for his staff to gain experience with the surgery recovery, without the other issues that may arise with a less healthy person
He is doing the easy cases for the summer, and then he and his staff will decide if he should move into the more complex DS surgeries, or continue with the Bands.
Once he decides to start the DS's, his nurses will have to go to Quebec to be trained.
He takes the DS very seriously, and will still see me 1 month prior to surgery. Not sure if that means all DS'ers will have an extra appt, but I assume its just that they are so new at this.
This is elective surgery, however, should be covered by STD
Common channel for DR Savoie is 100cm. They tried shorter in Quebec, but too many people returned to hosp with malnutrition, so 100 seems to be a better length.(yippee, that seems to be the length i have heard on average)
6 weeks - 3months + off of work, depending on the patient
7 days in hosptial post op
Pre-Op tests can be done in your home city--as long as in the province of NB
Honestly...at first, both the nurse, and nutritionist talked to me like i was getting the band, till I told them I was getting the DS. Keep in mind, that they both were amazing women...and were very helpful, and understanding.
Yesterday was the 3rd day they saw patients in the clinic, and Wednesday, is the first surgery(you already knew that) :)
Dr Savoie mentioned that politics held things up, but now he should be able to sail forward. He seems very excited to have things rolling.
Feel free to ask any questions, but I think that just about covers my day!!! We are on our way folks.

That is exciting to hear...I was wondering though where you are wanting the DS did he give you any idea or time frame as to when or how long your wait will be before you have your surgery? Just wondering. I know I would want them (the staff to be well trained before doing a different procedure for sure)
Thank you
Beth
Thank you

Thanks for all the info. Just wondering if they gave any idea when your surgery well be? I am also wanting to have the DS done. Is the Lakeview Inn close to the hospital, like walking distance? Price is right. Well I hope things move fast, but I think I can keep my hopes up for next year.
Talk to you soon Stephanie
Talk to you soon Stephanie
My referal was sent to his office back in December. When I called the clinic (he is based at the Diabetic Clinic at the Chaleur), they told me that he would not be seeing any new referals. I could expect to get a call for a consult appt in approx. October. Sigh.....was really hoping to see him over the summer......just feeling a smidgge disappointed.
