WLS ??????
Sorry if this is a repost. I have searched through about 10 pages of the forum and gave up. I have a few questions regarding WLS in NB.
Is WLS either bypass or lapband covered under medicare in NB?
How long is the waiting list?
How do you go about seeing the Doctor in Moncton?
If it isn't covered under medicare how much is the surgery?
What is the criteria for being accepted into the program?
Thanks for any help.

Hi there, Hope this helps,
Is WLS either bypass or lapband covered under medicare in NB? - Yes it is as of February 2008
How long is the waiting list?- It depends on which doctor you see. Beausoleil in Moncton can be 5 years, Savoie in Bathurst can be about a year or more the way things are going.
How do you go about seeing the Doctor in Moncton? - You need your family doctor to send a referral and then you have to be very good at waiting.
If it isn't covered under medicare how much is the surgery? - If you cant bear to wait and decide to go elsewhere it can be $10,000 or more depending on where you go.
What is the criteria for being accepted into the program? - that also depends on your doctor. You have to have a BMI of about 40 and have a history of trying to lose weight unsuccessfully. If you have co-morbidities that is health complications due to obesity then your BMI can be around 30 or 35 but don't quote me on that one. The bariatric doctor will make the final determination though as to whether you are a good candidate.

Duodenal switch and VSG are also covered. I agree with everything that Ann said except the minimum BMI with comorbidities is 35. Dr Savoie in Bathurst has a shorter list (we think) and does the DS plus the other surgeries. Dr Beausoleil will not do anything but the band on anyone over 54. Dr S goes case by case. If your doctor thinks that you have to see the endocrinologist, that is not longer required. I would send a referral to both doctors, but don't tell them that that you are doing this. I don't know about Dr S but Dr B will drop you from his list.
