How are you doin?
Hey Suzanne,
I'm doing okay, I guess. After eating almost a whole box of GasX last night and going to bed with my heating pad, most of the gas pains are gone now. I still have a little one in my left shoulder and a little pain around my port incision. Of course, I shouldn't complain about that pain, its the first day that I felt any pain with any of my incisions. Now the hunger pains that I am experiencing are a different thing. They say to "eat" my liquids every two hours with water in between but I can't seem to wait that long, sometimes the hunger pains are there even after I "eat". They are definetly hunger pains, not head hunger. I've had milk, chocolate milk, v8 juice, ensure, water, broth, tomatoe soup, crystal light and I've added powdered milk to alt of things, hoping that would do the trick....nada. I'm really not sure how I am gonna go until the 4th by just doing liquids....any suggestions?????????
On the bright side, I've lost 7 pounds since surgery, but hell....who wouldn't....hehe

Hey Jenn
Glad that you are getting some relief from the pain - it eventually passes but its no fun to deal with !
Just wondering on the liquid side- have you found a protein shake that you can tolerate besides the ensure....... if you have one and can make it in a bullet or blender with ice and milk - protein shakes from the powder are generally thicker and take a lot longer to get thru- hence you are more full - if you can not tolerate protein shakes you do still do the same with milk and the powdered milk with ice in a blender - it should thicken it up .
Also for soups I used the gourmet ones in the box - crap cant think of the name of them - but there was squash, an asparagus one, a spicy tomatoe I think and a carrot they were all so very thick and so flavourful and yummy - really filling.
I put them thru a strainer when I was on liquid phase just to make sure I didnt have anything to heavy in the puree consistancy of these very thick soups but they were so good like true homemade soups really fresh and tasty.
Someone might chime in and tell you the name of them - sorry my memory is bad.
Jenn I didnt have any hunger issues -couldnt manage to get enough in with my nausea issues but it would be no fun having hunger pains - if you are sipping all the time on water in between meals it should curb your hunger.... also try to do other things with your hands to occupy your time - our mind is a powerful thing and even head hunger can disguise itself - our body is going into shock after surgery and wants the food it is so used to receiving...
You are doing great and 7 lbs is wonderful- just keep on truckin girly it will get easier day by day!
hugs

Hey Jenn,
I know the liquid phase is a killer. You will probably be hungry just because of the fact that it goes straight through your stoma and can't come close to helping you feel satisfied and full. This is the time in this process where you find out what you are made of. There will be times when the hunger is so bad that the only thing that can come close to helping is sleep or sheer intestinal fortitude. If you can only go an hour to an hour and a half between substantial liquids then I would suggest you call the clinic, express your difficulty and ask if more frequent is okay. They expect you to call them for any little thing and if nobody is available they will try to call you before the day is out.
Deb's suggestions is a good one but be sure that the clinic or Rinette approve before you go thickening up your liquids.
That port incision is going to be the only one that hurts and it will for quite some time. I think Patsy had pain there in varying degrees for quite some time. I had it there for nearly a month. Its not severe as time goes on, just a reminder that "hey you have a foreign object inserted here and sewn to you muscle wall. Heck I was like nearly 4 months out and on my cruise and bumped my port kind of sharply by accident and it was sore for days after.
You are doing really well and if you can just hold on, redirect your attention when hungry, sleep when you are hungry or just grit your teeth and gut it out, you will be fine in just a few days.
Oh and my shoulder pain stayed, though it diminished slowly for a week or more. It will go away and the day it does I am sure we will all hear you shouting hallelujah.
Hang in there girlie, you can do this.
