I found these at     http://www.personal-nutrition-guide.com/protein-shake-recipes.html#proteinshakerecipes      and wanted to share.....

Make Your Own Bariatric Protein Shakes

  1. Start with a base of water, skim milk, Lactaid milk or nonfat yogurt (4-8oz).
  2. Note: Using milk or yogurt instead of water will boost the overall protein content of the final protein drink and make it a little creamier, but it also adds ~ 100 calories per cup. If you become lactose intolerant after weight loss surgery, definitely no milk or yogurt for you!

  3. Add a scoop of your favorite blendable protein powder. (See my favorite brands).
  4.

  5. Sprinkle in some of your favorite flavorings (see my examples below) or a small amount of fruit to jazz things up.
  6.

  7. Add ice.
  8.

  9. Blend. Add more ice if necessary to make your shake nice and thick (if desired).

Protein Shake Guidelines for Various Stages of Weight Loss Surgery

  • Pre-weight loss surgery: Use 4 oz skim milk/yogurt + 4 oz water as the base for your protein shake recipes.
  • Post-weight loss surgery: (first 1-3 weeks post surgery): Use 2 oz skim milk/lactaid milk/yogurt + 2 oz water as the base and gradually increase to 8 oz total. You'll likely be able to tolerate only a sip or two at a time in the beginning.

OHG these sound delicious!   As part of the Halifax protocol, we have to do a trail run before our next meeting. I am going to prepare soup puree soups as I am afffectionately known in these parts as the "soup nazi". I  have loads of ideas for high protien soups BUT these protien shakes willl sure make the difference in the liquid stage. It will be the most interesting journey in my life. I am actually looking forward to creating my menu plan and then followiing through. Thanks for all the ideas. Carmen

It sounds like the preparation for surgery at the QR II is much more extensive that in NB. Please enlighten me/us. I noticed you mentioned that you put together a team for your surgery- could you expand on that. I am beginning to realize that the program in NB is woefully in adequate. It is understaffed for one thing. The information session seems to be wonderful until you have a look at other programs.  I would love to hand a hand in creating a better support system.

Well, firstly, it is just so important to have the support team in your home community. Mine consists of a very supportive, forward thinking GP. Then there is my dietician who I have been working with for years and is very familiar with the Halifax WLS team. Then my trainor at the Gym who will help me with my exercise protocol.  I am meeting with all these people and giving them an outline of what is expected of me as a good patient, and of course, expecting and appreciating their support. Especially the Deitcian.  She will be an intregral part of the process especially diring the first four weeks.  That is my personal team and I am very excited. I just don't want to rely on the Halifax team if something small comes up that can be taken care of at home.   I also have made some pre-arrangements with a private nurse for the first week after I get home and that is covered by my extended health insurance. (Cover all the basis). The information given to us at the information session was extensive and interesting. They want to know we are seroius and we can do this before we actually do this. I have created a binder with all my puree recipies ie. soups etc and high protien drinks. Your drink suggestions have found a home with me.  I have to do this in the most preparedness and positive way or it just won't work. No room for second guessing or unsurietues.  I am an organizer though and a bit anal I might add. Any more questions.....I am always ready to rave on and on and on.... I love that you are interested in what we are doing in Halifax. Having the different surgeries, gives both Provinces more variety and choice. Chow, Carmen
