Food intolerences

I am sad. I am 2 weeks post op today. I've become so food intolerant. I can no longer tolerate milk, eggs, any kind of meat, most veggies, crystal light, nestea, water, coffee, protein drinks, boost, glucerna, slimfast, and most fruit juices.  I haven't tried beans or speghetti yet. I am almost afriaid to. I am hoping some of these intolerences will lift in time, otherwise I am left with a very limited diet. Soup, mashed potatoes and mashed carrots.

I'm curious what you mean by interolerence?  Do you no longer LIKE them. Or they make you vomit? or they go right through you?  I'm curious.

My pouch will not hold it. Pouchy sends it right back up again. That's the best case senerio. If it stays down I get nauseated and wish    it would come back up. If it won't do it on it's own, I sometimes need to help it come back up or suffer 4 or 5 hours of feeling nauseated and feeling miserable.

Hi Maggie,

Whatever you do, don't try to eat beans and spaghetti this soon - they'll both make you feel very ill as the gas from beans will expand your pouch, and the white flour carbs from the spaghetti will make you feel horrible.

The 4-5 hours of feeling miserable may be dumping - are you getting cold sweats with it as well?

When I get home tonight, I have the WLS for Dummies book, and they give a menu for fresh RNY post-ops. I'll type it out and post it here for you. It may help.

Just remember that your new pouch is like a new baby stomach - what you can't tolerate today, you may be able to in a few more weeks. Try not to let it get you down, and you'll see after a month or so, you'll be getting back into the swing of things again.

I'll see if I can do a search for a fresh post-op RNY menu for you here on obeisty-help. just a sec.

Hi again Maggie,

here's a couple of links that I found online. The Hopkins Bayview PDF is the same exact menu as in the WLS for Dummies book:

www.hopkinsbayview.org/bariatrics/docs/nutrition_gbp.pdf

This one is a bit different, but still filled with good tips for you:
www.allina.com/ahsimages5/bariatricmanual06.pdf

I hope that you start feeling better soon, and that you can get some relief from you nausea soon.

Two weeks sounds very early out for me. I've seen some say they were on liquids for the first month and then full liquids for the month after that. So I don't think you need to worry that your pouch can't tolerate much yet. It needs time to heal. Ease very slowly back into solid foods. Hope you're feeling better soon. I'm sure all that vomitting isn't helping things. Everyone says it does get better. Just give it time.

Thank you prancing nugut for providing a link to the baratric diet book. With the exception of tea there is nothing on that liquid diet list that I was able to eat. I am now on mechanical soft diet. That means all foods must be both mashed and well chewed. I am going by the booklet given to me by Dr. B.'s baratric team in Moncton. They have been doing this for the past 7 years so I am taking their advice.

I've read on the Rny bypass site that nearly all surgeons and baratric teams have their own ideas about what to eat when. It's very individual. I would never take the advice of a book over my surgeon and dietitian. Dr. B. allows mechanical soft diet at 13 days post op. In my case it doesn't really matter because I can't eat much anyway. Some surgeons have you going almost 2 or 3 months before you get solid food.

I have read though that something you can't eat today, you may do fine with a month or two from now. I don't know the progression of foods in lap banders. I don't know if it's the same or not. But after not being able to eat since Jan 25 as little food as it is I appreciate every mouthful that I am able to keep down.

I just read the second link that you sent. Thank you very much for the additional info but if I had to go 7 weeks on liquids alone, I'd shoot myself. It would be a whole lot kinder. Then 1 week puree. OMG.

I trust The Dumont Crew. If  I didn't have complete confidence in them I wuld have not had them do this surgery. Therefore I must comply with their aftercare as well. To do  otherwise would be to fly in the face of their time tested methods. I wasn't the first person on whom they did this prcedure.

Thank you both prancing nugut and mooseheadsll. It was so thoughtful of you to offer advice and encouragement.:)

Oh no problem!! We just want to see you on the mend and feeling better. :-D

Hey, there's a bunch of us in Saint John, and Amary and I have talked about getting together sometime and having an informal SJ meeting so when you're feeling better, let us know. :-)

You know prancing, I was thinking the same thing. There are a few of us here in Saint John' I'd love to go to get tgethers in Freddy and Mnctn but My car is so old and run down, I hate to take it  too far. I also don't drive at night unless it is absolutely an emergency. So If there was something here in the city, it might be nice.
