Recent NSV's
I want to share a few of NSVs. For those who might not know an NSV is a "Non Scale Victory". It has nothing to do with what you weigh on the scales but it is an achievement that really makes you feel like you have been victorious in one way shape or form.
One of my major goals was to be able to get down on the floor with my grandson to play. I thought it would be a long time before that happened. But recently my daughter-in-law stopped by with my 3 year old grandson and my 5 month old granddaughter. Of course my grandson wanted me to sit on the floor with him and so I did. In the past I would have lasted about 5 minutes - 4 of which would have been excrutiatingly painful. But I got down on the floor none the less. Then my daughter-in-law had to go to the bathroom so I said let me hold the baby while you go. So there I was on the floor with both of my grandchildren, playing cars with my grandson and holding my granddaughter and not hurting. I was in tears to think I could finally do this. I can be a fun Nana for my grandchildren and have it not hurt. Then later when I went to get up, I didn't need anyone to help me nor did I end up on my hands and knees searching for something to hang on to in order to stand up. I just got up, with great ease, much to my surprise! The tears started again, I had met the major goal I had been dreaming of for at least 3 years. When I got up my grandson toddled off to play and then later came back and said Come down on floor and play Nana and so I did and we had fun. That was a major NSV for me.
Another NSV happened as I was going through my cruise clothes from last year to find out what fit and what didn't so that I could shop for a few new things. Well silly me. I actually had no concept of things being too big from last year although I am down nearly 40 pounds. NOTHING FIT!!!!! duhhhh. I thought for some reason that some things that were tight last time would fit this time and that I would only have to purchase a few new things - NOT - I have to have all new stuff. Good News, Bad News but really Happy News if you are walking the Weight Loss Surgery Road.
And yet another NSV. I ordered a ****tail dress from Sears for the cruise. Now I haven't fit in a Sears Image size 24 in years. I would order the odd thing but it was always too small. Generally I would be lucky if it would go down over my bust line. So having tried on last year's cruise clothes I thought I would order a 24 and a 22 based on the fact that I have always felt that a 24 in an Image size ran smaller than a 24 from Pennington's or Addition Elle. Well the 22 fit - but its lots roomy and if I lose even 10 pounds it will be too big. I was amazed.
And my last NSV is walking. I have found my strength and stamina improving leaps and bounds with each little .2 of a pound weight loss. So I started back on my treadmill once I got over the coughing. Then the other night my husband and I went to the mall for a few things and I was walking along and all of a sudden he reached out and grabbed my arm. He said "either slow down or I have to get on the treadmill because its hard to keep up". I just about started to cry. My husband is strong, athletic and he has way longer legs than I do but he felt I was walking too fast? I have always struggled to keep up with him and now he was teasingly complaining? What's up with that? I told him you better get on the treadmill and work out a bit more to keep up because I am not slowing down. We both laughed and he told me he was very proud of me and to keep up the good work and he would have no problem keeping up. It is amazing what losing just under 40 pounds can do for your stamina and your self esteme.
So recently I have been having way more NSVs than Scale Victories but I am very happy with that. See its not always about the numbers on the scale, it is also about how you feel, how much better it feels to be healthy. For me to be able to play on the floor with my grand kids, to have to buy all new clothes for a trip and to be able to keep up with my husband while walking are major victories for me and I am so very proud of them and of myself for doing it.
All you waiters out there - take a page from my book, one day you too will be having lots of NSVs and you will be so proud of yourself you will want to run out and tell total strangers all about it.
Like Patsy - I am happy dancing today and burning calories while I do it. Life is good.

What a wonderful story. I almost cried while reading it. You know, I think of NSV often and quite honestly, we really do have alot. It is just that we are not trained to recognize them because as big people, we are conditioned to only look at the numbers on the scale. That is what weight loss programs focus on so that is how we measure our worth and successes. I am currently the leader of our TOPS group and I think next weeks program will be on recognizing the NSV in our lives. Thanks for your story as it gives me the incentive to put more importance and focus on those victories that are far more important than numbers.
Keep on posting these wonderful stories.
Oh Ann, you've made my day. What a wonderful post. Makes these years waiting almost seem worth it when I read your NSV's. I went from 293 down to 258 where I am now and I notice I have loose flabby skin in my ' apron'. I love it. It's only a little bit but I squeese it all the time. LOL I am sure a couple of years from now I won't be loving it anymore. I know how those NSV's feel. They make the whole process worthwhile. Keep up the good work! You go girl.
Awesome, Awesome, Awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Those are all excellent examples of NSV's.
You must be soooooooooo happy. I can't wait for everyone to experience this.
Keep up the great work !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
