What to take to the Hospital?

As I was a few hours from home when I had my DS...I was very happy to have brought some things to keep me busy or entertained while I layed around.  This turned out to be wise as I ended up in there 16 days. (leak)

So, what would I suggest to pack?

An Ipod - with either audio books or music you like to pass the time.
a bum whipper - I had trouble reaching my bits after surgery, well before too..but hurt like heck after.
a few magazines
my portable DVD, but didnt use it for the first week - hard to concentrate
a couple of nighties - again handy when in for extra days.
a sweat suit - which was lucky as I was able to wear it into the second week. and felt better for it.
It was during a heat wave - so those spray cans of water came in handy to cool down
handy wipes - the ones to remove bacteria - I found these great to keep my hands clean and feeling fresh...or my neck or face.
slippers with tread for my walking the halls

other suggestions for those packing?

DS Surgery June 2006,  Been fine every since.  Weight stays the same. Rarely remember I had surgery.....except for the daily vitamins.

Couldn't resist ... bum "whipper"????  I may bring something to help "wipe - wiper" my butt but will leave any other "whip - whipper toys" at home.  LOLOLOL

- heard that chapstick is a necessity due to the dry hospital air
- have a couple puzzle books
- will be lost without my laptop but not comfortable in having it there unattended while I am in a drugged stupor
- phone hooked up (parents want daily updates)
- Tupperware catalogue - might as well have a party while I'm there, lol
- crochet hook and yarn
- wet wipes or own toliet paper as my fanny can be fussy,
- journal book
- ear plugs in case the noise bothers me (not usually but I like to be prepared)
- sleep apnea machine
- tooth brush, comb and hair clips
- extra pillow for belly (especially on trip home)

Likely more to come, lol

Wow, thank you for those suggestions. I will be too far from home to get something I missed too. I hope to only be in 2 days. I was thinking a housecoat and slippers, some magazines, crystal light for my water and a pillow. I never thought of a sweat suit or my portable dvd and a couple of movies but I am afraid it will go missing.

Hey guys

You have most of it covered.

I also had a small travel pillow with me left over from the plane and it helped keep my hand up as they had such problems with my ivs that my hand just laying there pained awful..... so this lil pillow was just the right size to rest my arm/hand on an angle when I tried to rest. A big pillow I couldnt get to work right- just thought I would mention it.

I also went out to penningtons before surgery and bought a couple nighties in bigger size then I normally wore so nothing would rub on my incisions and also bigger size in bloomers so again nothing was rubbing against my tummy. I needed to start wearing the underwear right away as my post surgery period started by the time I was out of the hospital.

And dont forget to document pictures pictures pictures- I wanted nothing to do with them but now regret it.

If I think of some more things I will send along........ I also had to drag along a weeks worth of post op food - cream of wheat /sf jello/diabetic boost drinks and bottled water and soups..... I didnt want my husband to have to go out find a grocery store and try to find what I might like so the only thing he had to do was milk and bottled water- I also was so ill I didnt want him to leave me for long periods of time alone in the hotel - he would basically only leave when I was asleep and would slip out to get a bite to eat - as I couldnt stand the smell of food the first while! Blahhhhkkkkkk

Take care,
Deb

OMG, I thought I was the only one who had the bum wiper issue. I was too ashamed to even tell my doctor. I was  bigger ( 293) on a 5'3" frame and with my back problem, I can not twist or turn my back from side to side so I must wipe down and back.    Until I hit 260, I had to use wipers. I am so happy to know that I am not the only one here who has. I still have to in some public washrooms because of the height of the toilets. Hope this is not TMI for sme of you. I will be sure to take some to the hospital with me when I go. Thanks for that.
