question for Deb K
Hi Deb,
Thanks for posting all those sites earlier. I have a question though. I am wondering if you use protein shakes or drinks regularly and if you do what brands/flavours you use. I have been searching for a protein shake or drink that I can use to increase my protein intake. I already have thinning hair and would like to at least hedge my chances of it growing back if and when it falls out due to surgery. I had LapBand surgery on Dec 2 and already my hair is starting to thin a bit and it looks pretty lifeless. I know I am not getting enough protein, I have just started back on food.
I have tried a few protein shakes but have found them pretty gross. Do you have any suggestions?
Ann

Congrats Ann on your WLS and Happy New Year!!!
I dont know if hair loss can be as severe with lapband but mine got pretty bad... I was losing it in handfuls and the only thing that saved me is that I had really thick hair to start with and I chopped it off short- my hairdresser said he is finally noticing some lil growth spurts of new hair- its still really dry and in bad shape but I am so glad not to wake up covered in hair each morning or be clogging the tub all the time- so I know that it is getting better.
After my surgery I could not tolerate any protein drinks in fact besides water I couldnt tolerate anything - my first 4 months consisted of throwing up.... I was in the hospital twice for dehydration and then I ended up with pnemonia for 5 weeks and couldnt keep down my antibiotics so they put me in on iv antibiotics.....
My WLS clinic told me because I had been so sick, extremely anemic ( me hemoglobin was 67 after surgery) and not getting in protein is why my hair was falling out in handfuls.
The only protein powder I have found and it took a long time to find one that was not total yuck is the stuff from the website I mentioned - fortius products at www.iWinDirect.com
My favourite flavour is the Dynawhey Strawberry Kiwi - it has 30 grams of protein in each serving and it is my breakfast. I add frozen berries and make it with skim milk and put it in my bullet. I also enjoy the Dynawhey Orange vanilla cream and like it with frozen blueberries.
If you contact them they will send samples. A lot of time they have promotions or sales - buy one get one half price sales ( each 1080 gram bag is about $28.00) or they will have free shipping if you buy 2 bags- I even got a coupon for $10.00 off earlier last year. I like that it is being shipped from PEI so its here super quick and its in Canadian dollars - no duty or extra shipping fees or US dollars.
It may be available other places but this was how I discovered it so I just buy it through them.
You are correct getting your protein up will help with your hairloss and slow it down- I also took biotin supplements but dont know if they really made a difference considering how much I lost.
I am also on 600 mg of iron (ferrous fumerate) by intruction of the surgeon - I take Palafer brand - they told me to take it at bedtime with vitamin c chewable to help the iron absorb better. I couldnt take it in the beginning but now can finally.
I have my bloods done once a month because I have been so sick they do the whole work up each month and send the results to my surgeon in Montreal - my hemoglobin has come up to just over 100 so I am getting there. I have been to a hematologist and we are trying to avoid the iron infusions.
I know you dont have the malabsorbtion problems with lapband as we do in gastric bypass so you will probably notice a huge difference if you can find a protein shake you can tolerate.
Until I could take this - I was taking boost diabetic- strawberry was the only one I could stomach and had to drink it on ice and dilute with some milk as I got stronger it stayed down but I knew that it was not enough protein.
I have to get in at least 70 grams of protein a day - so my shake in the morning with the milk and I add yogourt sometimes as well brings it up to between 35-40- there is conflict on how much we can absorb at one time so I count it as 30-35.
I just ordered some hot chocolate protein drink and some other protein mixes from a few sites- a treat to myself over Christmas so I will let you know if any are really good.
Ann I also use the Nutri 15 cold protein drinks that you add to water they are juice flavours and they are really good - I have tried lemon/peach mango/wildberry and there is no protein after taste they are pricey $15.00 for a box of 7 packets but they are so great if you are on the road for the day and need to boost your protein intake. I also really like the Proti-Snax soy nuts in bbq flavour that you get from them also - I order them from www.minogue-med.com- they are in Montreal.
Sorry I babbled so long if you want to ask anymore questions feel free
