I had an episode (TMI for some of you)

Well I had my first nasty episode yesterday.  We hosted an open house yesterday and right in the middle of it, I got stuck on something.  I hardly ate anything so not sure what did it.  It was either a small piece of salami or a cube of bread, I think.  But oh my god....I was in the dining room talking with my neighbours who i had never met before and it overcame me.  I started to sweat and then i started to salivate.  I excused myself and dashed for the bathroom.  I was sliminig like crazy and was able to bring back up some slime (TMI I know) and after a time it passed.  Now I can't eat anything.  You are supposed to go on liquids for a day or two after that and I can see why.  Even if I wanted to I don't think I could eat.  It was very painful and very scary.  Restriction is wonderful but you have to be very very careful.

I am glad you shared Patsy.  Its not TMI for those of us who are following in your footsteps.  I can start trying unpureed food tomorrow so I need to know these things.  I am glad you are okay.  It was probably the bread because bread swells if even the slightest bit wet.  I think I read somewhere that we probably won't ever be able to eat bread or other things that swell like rice and pasta.  I hope you are taking care and back on liquids for a couple of days.  Thanks for sharing though.  Its most helpful.

Sorry to hear that! It’s sad to say but most bandsters can’t do bread after being restricted! It even says so on the lapband website and my best friend simply can’t do bread or steak at all no matter how much she chews- she gets stuck so she just avoids it. I’ve notice on the lap band forum also that bread is an iffy one.   My best friend tells me that she gets stuck a lot when she’s eating in front of people and she can’t figure out why. That’s why she orders soup a lot when she dines out. She says no matter how hard she tries to relax, she gets stuck and she spends most of her night in the bathroom!   I have seen her get stuck a few times and it looks super uncomfortable. She tells me the first time is always scary…so now you have that under your belt!   Congradulations – I guess :P

Oh Patsy - I hope you're okay now!
That terrifies me!  Some people just don't bother with bread, period!

Patsy, sorry you had to go through that .  Could you breathe good when you were stuck ?   Water would not be  a good idea would it ?  I think that I would have gone for the water , how wrong would I have been ?   Be careful , I hope it doesn't happen again !

I have had the same feeling before surgery when eating steak or something like that.  it would get stuck on the way down.  it hurts and you salivate alot but it does pass.  water would be a bad choice cause it would make the food swell.  what i did was stand up straight and arch my back backwards and go forward and it seemed to help things move along.  but you still have to wait for the band to make up it's own mind on when its going to clear.  you really need to wait the 2 days on liquids for things to calm down.  i tried mushies last night and it still hurt.  so nothing for me now until new years eve.  i don't want that pain again..  I could breathe just fine but the rest is aweful.  i'm glad it happened cause now i know what it is.

One other thing i realized is that nibbling is a dangerous thing.  when you sit down to your small plate of dinner with your baby fork, you are much more conscious of what you are doing and how you are chewing.  when you pass a buffet spread with nibblies, you pop one in like the old days and you forget what you are doing.  you always have to be aware of what goes in and how you chew.  small portions and chew like crazy.  these are all good tips for those waiting.  i have read all these things before but you forget until you go through it.  PLEASE TRY TO REMEMBER THESE TIPS !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read somewhere on t his forum that you could cross your legs ....that must have made you feel GOOD....Remembering back  when I had lost weight once ...I could cross my legs,, I actually felt skinny... Its a big feat to be able to do that . I am so tired of sitting like a big cow with legs wide open . I wore a dress to the last wedding I was at , my legs were sore the next day , from trying to keep them closed. I used muscles I never knew I had. How did I ever let myself get like this is beyond me !!!   You are doing good ,keep up the good work , you will be at goal in no time . Happy New Year.
