BPD/DS - helps to lower cholesterol and right choice if you have severe Arthritis - pretty...
It brings into light a few points...
1 is that BPD/DS lowers cholesterol...interesting that with all this meat the cholesterol is lowered. If this is something that you deal with...I suggest you do some more research to better understand why. My cholesterol has never been high...before or after surgery.
2. He says that compared to the RNY...DS is better for those with severe arthritis...I don't really get why...as I would have to read and do more research on the explanation...but a point I never thought about.
3. He does also note where the DS is not right for someone.
Have a look at page 133....and let me know if anyone has the book. It talks about all the surgeries, not just BPD/DS...and it looks liked the sections are written by Doctors.
I have to go get my beauty rest...but just stumbled across this...and it caught my eye...maybe you can glean more out of it then I did in this short time.
Take Care,
C

DS Surgery June 2006, Been fine every since. Weight stays the same. Rarely remember I had surgery.....except for the daily vitamins.
and I see on Page 75 it talks about banding with positive expectations.
So, this book may have something for us all...shame we are missing pages.
maybe it is somewhere else out there on the net.

Hi Catherine,
I don't have the book, but may be able to do a search for a downloadable copy.
As far as I've been able to research, the reason that DS'ers have lower blood cholestrol, even though DS'ers get a lot of their protein through meat products, is the since fat is not digested, it does not get deposited in the arteries, nor does it flow freely through the blood to form cholestrol. It would be interesting to see the next time you give blood, or have a blood test, ask if your blood forms a layer of fat on top after it settles (if you eat a high-fat diet, your blood develops a layer of fat that settles on the blood - it's grim). It would be interesting to find that out.
The only benefit of DS regarding arthritis that I can see is that since DS'ers must take suppliments, or else die, they are getting more in their systems, and an increase of vitamines C and D are proven to help arthritis. But I may be talking out of my butt here. :--D
Dr. Michel Gagne is also Canadian. He studied at the University of Sherbrooke, and moved down to the States afterwards. I do believe that he may have studied with Dr. Marceau as well.
