I had my burning question answered too! I asked Dr B if I were 10 years younger, which surgery would he be recommending.  He said he would still be recommend the band. I said that research says that the band is not as effective. He said that on going study has led to more frequent fills (every 6 weeks instead of every 3 months). He said that they used to see bandsters every 3 months. like RNY patients. They now know that the band gets looser as you lose weight and that the band is only effective when it is correctly filled. Now they see bandsters every 6 weeks for fills/ adjustments. He said that the lastest research shows that for patients with BMI's of less than 60, the band is just as effective asthe RNY and the weight loss is the same.
I forgot to bring my home scale to compare it to their's. We had to rush off earlier than we expected, because of the road conditions. Horrible!  I weighed in at 7 pounds less that the last weigh-in. Yah me!
Now I just have to wait for the call for pre-op day.  Closer and closer to the big day.

Great Stuff Charlene!  I think the main thing is to be sure you are getting the right surgery!  And obviously you are sure.  I believe this is the ticket to success and I am sure you will do wonderfully!  And I also see much higher success rates with this NB forum anyway statistically.  The results are really amazing!  We never hear bandsters here raising any negatives about the band..so I think it is working wonderfully for those that work with it!

so...it really is the beginning of your new WLS life.  I am excited for you and hope you get your call soon.  Is there any chance you will have it before Christmas?

Take Care,
Catherine

DS Surgery June 2006,  Been fine every since.  Weight stays the same. Rarely remember I had surgery.....except for the daily vitamins.

I’m glad that Dr. B explained this to you. Having the band is not the key to weight loss- It’s all about the fills. An empty band is like you have nothing at all in there! I am happy that Dr. B will begin taking in his patient for fills more often. I plan on pressuring Dr. S for mine! I find the more Dr’s are aggressing on fills, the more a patient loses. I’ve been calculating the stats on this site alone- measuring patients’ weight loss along with fills and that’s what I’ve concluded.

My best friend is one of Dr. B’s successes (banded since Dec 2005- lost 140 pounds and now at her ideal weight) and she has always told me, it’s all about fills, fills, fills, and fills. Sure you can lose weight without a fill, don’t get me wrong, and you can also lose weight without a band, but the fills are what makes the band work.   My best friend has always told me- be proactive with your fills. The minute you feel loose, call and book an apt for a fill. She continues to get fills to this day, but only once a year now.

My other banded friend, she was banded in August this year and only got her first fill in November because Dr. B was behind. She wrote to me last night and she’s already lost 20 pounds!!! She gained between her surgery and first fill and she was so discouraged. She was supposed to get RNY but Dr. B changed his mind right before the surgery and she was sure the band would not work for her.

Charline- you are getting there my darling!!! I’m so happy for you! Hopefully I’ll be next on the loser’s bench!!!

Yay Charline!!!! One step closer!!  There might be a cancellation so here's hoping you get your pre-admission soon.  Please see my post about "bodily functions" and agony.  You should talk to Rinette when you get the chance.  I am glad you had a good weigh in too.  That used to bother me even if I knew at home that I weighed less than the last time I worried that something would happen and I would get on their scales and would not have lost.  Yay for you that you were down 7!

I am also glad you asked the question about banding and age.  It sure makes me feel like I have done the right thing all the way around and that my odds are good for success.

You are on you way girl, You could have an interesting New Year's Eve if someone cancels and they have cancellations quite a bit sometimes and then there are stretches when there are none.  I just hope your timeline works for you.  Waiting for you on the other side.

I read your post- I'm sorry that you had to suffer so much.
I was very anxious about the weigh in, because last time I was weighed, I had lost 4.5 pounds but I had lost 9 pounds according to my home scale!  I have kind of taken yesterday and today off the diet battle. I went to luch after my appointment (I usually have a meal replacement) and I also shared an ice cream with hubby. Tonight I went to a baby shower and had a couple of sweets. Overall I didn't over do it, but it's back to the salt mines tomorrow. We are having our office Xmas party Friday, another mine field. I sure hope the band makes it easier.
I woud like to get Xmas over with before surgery, but I would go boxing day!! I wouldn't pass up a cancellation no matter when.

Be very very careful.  They could call you tomorrow with a cancellation and if you are up, they won't take you.  you never know when that phone will ring.    I'd hate to see you miss an awesome unexpected opportunity. It's more important now more than ever to be good and stay on track.  I remember Krista got postponed for gaining.

I am back on track. I went to a dinner tonight and I didn't have potatoes, gravey, or dessert. I had turkey, carrots, broccolli, and a roll.  Other than that, I have bran cereal, soya milk, an apple, a Gluscerna shake, and a piece of apple (Splenda) dessert. I wouldn't refuse a cancelation, but honestly I would rather wait until after Xmas. I would hate to get a call for a cancellation and be up a pound and be postponed for a couple of months. I think if I got a cansellation call and my weight was up, I would take a pass.
