The criteria for WLS  for NB Medicare is either a BMI of over 40 or over 35 plus comorbidities. Whether the surgeon does YNU or the band is up to the surgeon.  I wonder why he wouldn't even consider RNY for me,- when I asked he said that thw BMI has to be 60 + before he will consider it.

Yeah, I wanted bypass too but he did not seem to anxious to do it. He kept emphasising lap band. I'd much sooner have bypass.

It wasn't that I wanted the bypass over the band- I just wanted whichever one would work best and not have the band because of my age. Once he explained that recent research shows the band is equally effective, if kept filled properly, I am happy with the band. Besides if you stretch your stoma with the bypass, you are out of luck. With the band, you can regain some or most of the restriction with a fill.

I think the weight comes off faster with the bypass. My worry is that I build adhesions really fast. I fear that within a couple of years, I'll have that thing encapsulated and lost forever. I once had to undergo a 3 hour operation to release adhesions from a previous surgery.
Charlene, have you already chosen a surgery? Do you make the final decision when you sign your consent?

There is always the option of seeing the other surgeon in Bathurst for a second opinion or other surgery options as he does the Sleeve, DS and lapband.  For many other procedures, conditions or prognosis we automatically think of getting a second opinion - for our health, a family member health and even our vehicle's health, lol.

Dr Savoie's list is not as long as Dr B but word is spreading around about him so I wouldn't wait too long!

Plus in one of the other posts there was a link to get a second opinion from a UK doctor via email.

For any procedure to have the best results, you really have to believe it tis the best for you and be fully on board with the lifestyle and responsibilies that come as a result.
Live, Love, Laugh - Life is short so enjoy today!
