Workout Protocol

Does anyone here know whether there is an exercise protocol after WLS?  All I asked Santa for Christmas is a gym membership and a personal trainer. BUT I also need to know how long after surgery can one workout and/or what types of exercises can one do?  Any feedback would be great.  Cheers, Sugarbear

Hi,
for me any exercise which is good without WLS is good after WLS...but I had the DS.  Not sure if this is different for hte Band.

The main thing is to exercise...and I can not rave enough about swimming...pre surgery...swim underwater alot to get those lungs healthy...and aquasize is perfect.

One would think I am actually exercising wouldn't one   But I am hopeless...my god I am still so lazy when it comes to exercise...

But...I am getting into the pool a bit lately!  There is hope for me yet!

IT is especially important for those with RNY and DS...and probably the sleeve..in that we have this window for weight loss..the first two years normally...before your body settles into its weight.  So...this is a key time to really exercise and get the weight loss off...then when you body stops loosing...you are at the best place to be weight wise, and health wise.

It is definately one of those do as I say...not as I do situations

Good Luck, and keep us posted!
Catherine

and I missed one question..how long after surgery...

Immediately after surgery as soon as I was able..like next day...I was told to start walking the halls.  And then when going home...walk walk walk..as much as possible.  For the blood clot risk mainly and to build back up the lungs.

then it was 6 weeks for more vigerous exercise.

I am almost 6 weeks out, and I just joined Curves.  It's a 30 minute work out which is exactly what is required for Lap Band patients.  30 mins per day, every day.  so on days without curves I will walk.  I waited 6 weeks before I got into curves, just to give my incisions time to fully heal.

I have to agree with Patsy, with most surgery, you should wait 6 weeks before strenuious exercise. I suggest that you find exercise that you enjoy. Otherwise you are unlikely to stick to it. Start slow with something like walking. It's portable and free.  If you back and or knees object to walking, try nordic walking. You burn 40% more calories, you don't feel like you are working harder, and it is tons easier on your back & knees.  Before I bought my poles, about a month ago, I couldn't walk around the block because of my back, today I walked 1.5 mi;les at lunch today.  Studies show that you don't have to walk for 30 minutes at once; 2x15 or 3x10 provide the same nbenefit. Lastly, you don't have to wait, start exercising now and you will do much better through the surgery,  Finally with walking you can start as soon as a few days after surgery- using common sense as to how much and how far.
