Lapband vs RNY
Your doctor will generally decide which one is best for you. In New Brunswick there are 2 doctors. Dr. Beausoleil in Moncton and Dr. Savoie in Bathurst. Dr. Beau does Lap Band and RNY. Dr. Savoie does Lap Band and DS, not sure if he does RNY though. I go to Dr. Beau. He refuses to do RNY on anyone age 55 or over. That is a personal preference for him. So being 55 that put me out of the running for RNY so its the Lap Band for me - this coming Tuesday. Some people have gone to Dr. Savoie thinking they want the Lap Band and he suggests DS for them. I am not sure what criteria he uses to make that suggestion. Perhaps some of his patients will comment on your question. But overall the doctor has a lot to do with which one you have.

Welcome to the group Dolly,
You should really read every single page for every single type of WLS - Lap Band, Rny, Dudenal Switch, Sleeve - they each have pages that describe what the surgery does, how your body is changed, the complications and the life requirements/restrictions afterwards. Check out the different forums as well as the Complications and Revisions forums.
Check out some other sites too, read studies, watch the videos and become very informed.
Depending on where you live and who your doctor is you may or may not then have a choice. I was told by the nurse that Dr B decides which procedure he preforms on his patients. On the other hand when I had my consult with Dr Savoie I explained why I wanted the DS and he supported with with that (actually told him I was not interested in the lapband so no need to even discuss it, lol).
Biggest thing is to find out what you can live with for the rest of your life. This is a huge decision and you need to feel right about the surgery.
Good luck,

Consider things like this:
Are you a volume eater or a sweet eater (not volume)?
Do you have diabetes, stats show some are more successful then others in curing?
Are fills going to be convenient?
Do you want to see the ghrelin reduced? or is this an important point for you?
How old are you? Too old for one surgery or maybe too young for a more serious surgery?
Review the stats on weight loss. If you loose say, 50 percent of the amount you need to loose, will you still be obese? what if you loose 60, 70, 80?
Consider how much you have to loose, if you have to loose 200 pounds...is a different thing then needing to loose 100 pounds...look back to the statistics.
Which surgeon do you want to have surgery with?
What surgeries does your surgeon perform?
I am not giving any answers...but these are the types of questions you should consider when researching your surgery choices!
Good luck, research is a painful process. I did not have the Band or the RNY so this is not an area that I can really help with. But as part of my research...I did examine the pros and cons of each as well as the DS.
So...I recommend you make a list...put in the pros and cons for each...and see what come to you as the right solution. This worked for me.
Take care,
Catherine
