We met Dr. S (Carole and Meg as well)
hihi! :)
Sorry for the quick "drive by". I think Meghan was expecting to be done before Christmas for some reason. Dr. S wants to wait until she is 18. That is only in July and I am totally fine with that but she was a bit upset and was heading for the car so I had to scoot out with her. I so wanted to be able to chat with you:(
I am quite relieved he is waiting until the summer. I don't think I would want to travel up that road allot in the winter. He said she is a great candidate for the surgery but I knew that already :) I am so excited for her. And to wait a few months is not a big deal considering I waited 5 years :) She will be OK.
It sure was a long day for us though. We left the house at 7:45, made a few stops (gas and Starbucks) and arrived there at about 12:10. Went to a yummy Greek restaurant for lunch and got there early for the appointment. It was a piece of cake to find. I am kinda proud of myself to have got there with out Mike. (yay Me!)
I am glad things went well for you. I'm not sure where you are from, but I'd sure like to be able to sit down and have a chat someday with you.
BTW....you are absolutely gorgeous!

well, I don't blame her for being dissapointed. It was nice to meet you and I didn't realise that you got banded back in 07.
I have to admit that I wish you could talk to my mom... you're proof that it was a success and that you want your daughter to have the operation. Obviously, for you to encourage her means you're comfortable and happy with the procedure... and with good reasons. You look AWESOME
My family (mom, dad and sister) are totally against this procedure and it's making me very sad. They keep on saying, please please please try the "natural" way. I've been trying the "natural" way for the past 10 years!!!!!! HELLO?!?!?! I explained my pros and was honest about the cons however whatever I say, they have put a wall and they are not listning to me. I'm at a point that it's about me. It was always about everybody else but guess what... NO MORE... I have to be selfish for once in my life. In a year when I'm at ideal weight, healthy and glowing, hopefully they will be happy for me. I'm very close with my family and I'm just hoping it will stay the same.
I have to admit that I understand that they are concerned, but it hurts that they are only concentrating on the 0.1% chance that I could die. I have 99% chance to be the old Rachel and actually, the NEW Rachel They also are thinking that this is like a ticking time bomb that could explode in my body.
My husband stands by my decision 100%. I love him SO much.
I made a decision to keep things to myself (you, my forum family and my beautiful husband)
Carole- thank you for making that comment. I need some encouragement...
to my cyber family, my best,
Rachel

This makes me very sad - your mom and sister aren't obese huh?
Like you said, when they see you heathyand better than ever then they will change their minds.
I don't know if you have any diseases or conditions at this point but, I'm 26 years old and I'm pre-diabetic, I have acid reflux and IBS.
Obesity is a cardiovascular risk, is the leading cause hypertension and type 2 diabetes.... how can a small procedure in which you have 0.1% chance of dying and that greatly reduces or even eliminitates these conditions be bad?
I don't know about you, but I would rather have a minor surgery than have a heart attack, stroke, or type 2 diabetes.
It sounds to me like your family is so blinded by fear that they aren't seeing the big picture- you will be around way longer if you have this surgery than if you don't.
Obesity is a metabolic disease.
GOOD FOR YOU FOR FOLLOWING YOUR HEART. This is a selfish decision and it should be. You choose life and no one can blame you for that.

Hi rachel,
I hate to be a mathametician but it was point 1 percent. There is 99.9% chance that you will be fine. a big chunk of that risk is the risk of anestetic. In other words unless you have a severe reaction to the anestetic, you will be fine. The other risk is lifting the liver and if do everything you are told, your liver will be fine. If there are liver problems they will find them before in the pre-op screening. Being obese, you probably have blood tests occasionally and they likely test your liver function anyway.
I'm glad you saw the good doctor- what did he say? Did he recommend the band? I hear he is easy on the eyes too.

Sorry If I was too straight forward on my question- I deleted it.
yes, he is very nice on the eyes. It was not what i expected! I'm so excited to get my call!!! I saw him on the first day of his consults so since Oct 9th and it's been such a LOOOOOOONNNGGGG wait- but it's moving along!
Glad you're on your journey!! The wait is very annoying but at least there are a bunch of us "Waiters" together on here!!!

I'm so happy that you both got in to see him!!
Rakiki, I think that your family wil understand once they see your face glowing with hapiness that you made the right choice for yourself. Sometimes you have to stick with a decision, no matter if other people close to you don't agree wiht you, because it's the best decision for you, and the best decision to make a change in your life in a positive way. They're probably only scared because it's surgery, and they care for you so don't let them get you down. It sounds like you have wonderful support from an amazing husband, so he'll be there to back you up and be your rock when you need him.
Carole, I know that 8 months is almost a life-time to a teen-age girl, but those months will pass by so quickly, and she'll be banded before she knows it. Also, she's getting it while she's still so nice and young, and will have a whole lifetime ahead of her to learn to grow with her procedure as she's learning to grow with other experiences in her life. I know that she won't see it that way now and it was a great dissapointment to her, but I'm sure that it'll only be a memory when she finally gets banded. Good luck to you both! :-)
