Hi there

Has anyone had a DS with Dr. Savoie, I am really happy that there is finally a Dr. in Canada doing DS but I can't seem to find any info on him for DS only Lapbands.  I tried to get answers from his secretary/nurse but she was a little evasive about his experience in DS.  This is major surgery and I know someone has to be one of the first, but being selfish i don't want it to be me.

Dr S  was just trained by a Dr in Quebec that clawrence says is one of the best in the world. He just set up his practice and will start surgery in Dec or Jan.

Hi,
If you are researching the BPD/DS you will see studies done by Dr. Picard Marceau of Laval, Canada.

In the site below it says "
In 1993, Dr. Picard Marceau of Laval, Canada, published a report on the benefits of the BPD/DS procedure over the unmodified BPD (Marceau, P., S. Biron, et al. (1993). "Biliopancreatic Diversion with a New Type of Gastrectomy." Obes Surg 3: 29-35.). This report confirms that the DS procedure eliminates or greatly minimizes most negative side effects of the original BPD."

I did not go to Dr. Picard Marceau myself, but my understanding is that the Dr. in Bathurst studied under thim.  If this is the case, then I feel he training under one of the leading ds surgeons.

There are others here talking directly to the Dr. about DS...I am sure they willb e along shortly.

Hi

I met Dr Savoie a couple weeks ago and will be having a DS procedure this winter.

Trust me, I did not want to be his "first" either so I specifically asked him questions about his training.  Yes he studied under Dr Picard and has done the procedure himself - I asked if he had done the DS surgery himself or just assisted - he answered that he has done hundreds of the procedure himself while in Quebec.

Plus keep in mind that he was a surgeon for a number of years beforehand (although he looks young) and assured me that the hospital staff will also be well able to care for us similar to the many who have had abdominal surgeries due to cancer etc.

Have you had your consult yet?

Thanks everyone, I feel a little better.  I am still going to try and get out of country approval from OHIP because I live in Toronto and Michigan is a lot closer than New Brunswick (4 hr drive vs 25 hr one) but if I am not successful with that then I will get a consult with Dr. S. and take it from there as I really don't want an RNY.

Where ever did you get the 25 hours of driving from!  It`s more like 16 to 18 hours- especially if you plot your route carefully. There are a number of shortcut routes.

Dr Savoie told me during my consult, that he performed 2 surgeries a day/5 days a week for the past year...The majority of which were DS.
