Hi,
There is a show on Discovery Channel tomorrow night..not sure if you get it in NB.    A guy called Gary S on this site wrote this note on the BPD/DS forum.  If anyone does get this channel and is going to be at the Dinner early Dec...can you record it for me?  I would really like to see it.
Thx,
Catherine

I have had the priviledge of having my surgery followed by The Discovery Channel in a series entitiled Extreme Bodies - Super Obesity being aired on Monday November 17 at 9 PM and again on Nov 18 at 1 AM.  I had the Duodenal Switch and they have pre-op interviews, were in attendance during my surgery, and have two month post op interviews as well. The full series includes Dwarfism, Giantism, and Conjoined Twins but I thought that the Monday Night showing would have particular relevance for everyone on this board.

I haven't seen any of it yet, but I did live through it.  It was very gratifying to have my own camera crew follow me through all of the stages of preop admission, blood testing, and then right into the OR as well.  I got Dr. Rabkin to agree to not be too distracted by the cameras during the procedure.  The crew was so impressed by the procedure, that they stayed for an extra hour in the OR.

RIght now I have lost 101 lbs in four months, my back and knee pain have resolved, my diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol are gone, and I have my energy back.  I have lost about 12 inches off of my waist and have another 91 pounds to go to reach my target weight.  So if anyone is considering weight loss surgery, this would be a good introduction. If anyone missed their own surgery because they were asleep, you can watch mine and be nostalgic.

Yes I checked too - it is the US Discovery Channel - hopefully our Canadian one will show it at a later date.

If anyone with an American Satellite Network and are able to tape it for me I would be very appreciated!

My friend watched this the other night (she has American satellite) and she mentioned that she had seen it at work. I told her that this was the surgery that I was planning on getting. She was impressed by the fact that this procedure is being used as a 98% chance cure for diabetes as she's a diabetic herself. I was just so happy that she was able to see for herself what the procedure is and how it's done as I can explain until I'm blue in the face, but you can understand it so much better this way.

Hi,

The diabetic part is amazing.  People don't even have to loose their weight, but leave the hospital after the rerouting of insides without their medications.  This is more often the case with RNY and DS, but as well there are major studies on the Band and how it is affecting Diabetes.

I have also heard, there are even studies of how they can give a WLS type surgery to cure type 2 diabetes to someone who doesn't have a weight issue....because of the positive results with WLS.  But...this is proving difficult...because yes...people loose the Diabetes, but...they can not afford to loose any weight.

Take Care,
Catherine
