Walking for Dumbos LOL

I was in Moncton again last week. I went into XS Cargo and one of my finds, was a set of walking poles.  With a little research, I figured out how to use them. I found out that the "sport" is called Nordic walking. I have been trying to start walking but my back gets so sore and my chest seems to close up. Well the first time I used the poles, I circled our huge block non-stop for the first time in over 2 years. The great thing about the poles is you work 40% harder but you don't perceive that you are putting out more effort. You burn 40% more calories, while taking stress off your back and knees. Well, a week after buying the poles, we received an e-mail at work about a class about Nordic walking. At the session I also learned that it helps counteract the effects of pounding a computer all day. But the biggest revelation was that my now beloved walking poles are really  trekking poles meant for hiking in mountainous terrain!!!!  LOL     The jokes on me!!    The main difference is that my poles are adjustable.  Well, they work fine...oh the other difference is price. The real things are 115.00. I paid 20.00 for mine.. Maybe that joke isn 't on me afterall.

St John has a walking group that meets in a different part of the city 6 days a week. Anyone out there interested in goging for a walk over the weekend,??,,,you might even want to try out my nordic....rrrrr...trekking poles!

Ooh awesome! I read about those poles before in Woman's Wolrd I think. Some woman lost a lot of weight walking with them. I wondered how they were and how expensive they were. They sell them here not too far from my house. :-D You can be a mountain climber in training. ;-)

I'd love to go for a walk with you sometime. I may only get in 5 minutes worth, and I'd be huffing and puffing all the way. :-D I won't be able to go this week-end though as I have to write an exam that's due on Tuesday morning and I think that I'm going to be stuck home.. :-( I had to tunr down an invite to a WII fit session too. Wahhhhhhhhhhhhh I suck!

Let me know if you come up again though - it'd be a hoot to meet you!

Funny, Charline...that sounds like fun.  I especially like the idea of 40% more calories  while taking stress off back and knees.  I have a bad back that gets worse with each pound I put on and won't be able to wal****il I shed a few of them....at least that's what I'm hoping!  I want to walk so bad again so I will be able to walk my dog!!!  Do you know if those poles can be purchased locally?  Anyway, keep me in mind for future walks..hopefully sooner than later.

I have seen the trekking poles like mine at the Co-op but I don't know if they have then now. There was mention of the Radical Edge. I have the saleswomen's card. Her in-laws live here andshe will deliver.  She lives in St John. They cost about 130.00.  If you can find the trekking poles at a discount store, they are only 20.00. I want to make sure I stick (no pun intended) with this before investing more money.

My mom went to the Nordic Walk session here in Oromocto on Tuesday night and now has bought herself the poles. It looks interesting enough..

Let me know how she likes them. I would like to get a group of "not so fit" folks. Maybe you could borrow Mom's "sticks" and go for a walk some time.
