Great advice Stephen!!! That is one thing I was wondering about - protien powder. So you got yours at Bulk Barn. Does it come in flavours or is it unflavoured? I tried one from Superstore and it was gross. Since it comes in huge bottles and you spend the better part of 20 to 30 or even 40 bucks on the stuff I figure you should at least love the taste of the stuff. I put the stuff I purchased with milk and a bit of yogurt in a blender and nearly choaked on the stuff. I think I will check out the Bulk Barn today when I am in Moncton visiting my kids. If anyone has found a protien shake that they just love would they please share the brand name with us? This is something we need to know.
I purchased a package of 6 cans of SlimFast Optimum in the Chocolate Royal. Its not the tastiest thing I have has recently, so I just swilled it down and topped it off with a drink of water. I didn't get hungry for several hours but I think I will try the powder version in milk to see if it tastes any better.
Also Stephen, how are you feeling? Hope things are progressing nicely for you.

Hi Stephen,
I am really glad to hear that Bulk Barn has the protein powder....it is darn expensive in the huge amounts, so I am hoping at Bulk Barn you can get it in much smaller quantities.
But generally I am not sure I agree with your advice. I hae a couple of areas where I would like further discussion...you may be able to convience me....I like to learn new strategies.
If someone has a year or two or more to their surgery...is this a really good way to get your weight down? Not sure, I have mixed feelings there.
And as a DSer it is really not recommeded that I rely too much on Protien suppliements...so, I really make all efforts not to get too used to them. So, if I form this habbit before my surgery it might make the supplements just a little too convenient after. I can assure you...it is a difficult thing to get in your 80 to 120 grams of protein some days, but I dont want to be using the crutch of protein shakes to do it..and try things like fitting in a lot of caffee lattes.
It was my experience that my surgeon wanted me to eat fairly normally (normal peoples normal, a healthy diet) prior to surgery...in the months leading up. To gradually loose was good, but the emphasis was on getting alot of exercise. That I needed to really build up my lungs and general stamina for this very serious surgery (the DS). Then in the final 2 weeks, really hit a diet hard, to loose as much as possible in that short time...thus shrinking the liver as much as possible before surgery. My information was that when one starts a real strong diet...the first organ to react is the liver. And that is one of the main reasons for the liquid diets and very strict diets in the weeks before the DS.
One point I do whole heartidly agree with is the exercise. Especially in the 2 to 3 months prior. It is really key to being as healthy as possible. And to build that lung power. It will help so much after in your recovery. In other countries, there are alot of surgeons who will not operate if you have smoked inthe week prior. Mine was one of them...he said it just causes your wounds to heal so much slower...he is not interested in operating on you if you smoke. So, quiting smoking is a key thing that alot of folks planning this surgery do.
I sure hope I have not caused any offence. I know DS is different from the other surgeries, and I can only put forth my experience. And to go on a strict protein shake diet in the months, years prior to my surgery might not have been the best approach.
I welcome your feedback...and hope we can meet up at the Dec dinner in Fton, so you can see, I am not totally difficult :) well...not all the time anyway :)
Take Care,
Catherine

Hi Catherine : Of course your right , If you have years to go before surgery slimfast would not be the way to go but counting calories would be plus walking1200- 1500 cal for women 1800-2000 for men. I was mostly referring to the people who will be going before the end of the year.Evertime you visit DR.B they weigh you of course and if your weight goes up on one visit it can postpone your surgery. I thought i would feel run down on protein shakes but i really didn't and actually felt good.
I went to Bulk Barn today in Moncton - all they had were big bottles of whey protien. And some small packets but they were all flavoured. The brand I purchased was PVL Whey Gourmet in Creamy Orangesicle Swirl, Vanilla Ice Cream Royale and Creamy Dreamy Milk Chocolate. (Makes me nervous when the name sounds like over kill - like they are trying to convince you that this stuff is the cat's PJ's.) These are one serving pouches. Does the kind you purchased at Bulk Barn have a brand name Steve? Is it in bulk format or in a large "jug" type bottle? I am really looking for some specific name brand etc to try. I just don't want to go out and buy a huge container if it makes me gag like the last one did. I would certainly prefer unflavoured but did not see anything at "my Bulk Barn" that said Unflavoured.
Thanks for any info you or anyone else can give me.
Ann
