Hi,
I am just reading the main forum and hear about "dumping" when people eat sugar...also the "lap band" vs "RNY"....if you have more than 100 lbs to lose and are addicted to sugar...which one works best.....and what is dumping exactly...??

Does Dr. Beausoleil do both?

Sorry about the questions, but any info is appreciated.

Dr Beausoleil does do both procedures as far as I know. I'm not sure if he does both laproscoptically or not though.

It really depends on you and the doctor regarding which procedure you pick, and also to weight the pros and cons of both procedures. Wikipedia does have a good explanation of both procedures. There are other procedure available as well, but again, I'm not sure if Dr Beausoleil or Dr Savoie performs these. For myself, I would like to have a vertical grastric sleeve done, but I don't know if the NB doctors perform it or not.

Because RYN is a malabsortive procedure, your body can't absorb the fats or sugars, so it goes through the "dumping" process which is usually when the lower end of the small intestine fills up too rapidly with food, and you get bloating, gas, cramps, diarrhea, and rapid pulse. But there's probably a lot more that goes on there than I know about, and someone probably has a heck of a better explanation than I do. :-D

Which procedure you have is based on a lot of factors including you age, the amount of weight you have to loose and your eating addictions.  Dr B will not do RNY if you are 55 and over, because he has lost 2 patients over 55 having RNY.  I think you said something about kids, so you have a choice.  The lap band does have advantages- it is 20 times safer that RNY, vertually zero operative complications, it is reversable (if necessary),  no malabsorbsion (so you don't have to worry about suffering from malnutrition), recovery is easier, & it is adjustable to allow more calories for medical conditions or pregnancy to name a few. I knew that I wanted the lap band from the first time I hear about it. It just seemed a more natural choice, so I am not knowledgable about RNY.Do your research and asking questions here and on the various forums is one source. Just a word of warning, The is disinformation on this site from people that  campaign against  this or that weight loss surgery. An example- i read a post on the general board that said that the lap band has to be replaced every 5 years- not true. This post that a list of untrue statements stated as fact. Just be aware and verify the "facts".
