Hey there everyone, I was just wondering. I live in Ontario but I have a friend in New Brunswick that would like to have the RNY done. She is not sure of the process down there and of course I am not sure how it works there either. I was also wondering how long the waiting period is? Also if anyone can tell me but does your New Brunswick Medicare cover you to have it done State side? If someone could get back to me I would be very thankful. Heatherk [email protected]

First she has to get a referral from her family doctor to Dr Beausoulel- I think I have spelled that wrong. She should also get a referral to the local specialist that will make the recommendation to Medicare for approval. I have been waiting for 2 years to see the specialist here in Fredericton and I am told I have 1 more year to wait. Then you go on Dr. B's waiting list which is 3 to 5 years long. Discouraging eh? NB Medicare does not pay for surgery in the US. There is only 1 surgeon for the 3 maritime provinces.

Hi Heather: I know three ladies from NB who went to Ontario to have lap band with Dr Chris Colbourne. Medicare did not pay as it is a private clinic but I'm pretty sure one of the gals received approval from our Medicare IF it was done in a hospital. She went the self-pay route but that was an option. Not sure what the wait is like there in Ontario for RNY. As the previous poster said, there is just the one doc right now in Atlantic Canada doing the surgeries. There is another young doctor under his tutelage but I haven't heard when / if he will be taking patients as well. I believe I waited at least 3 if not 4 years for my surgery start to finish.

Didn't anyone anyone ever tell you that Medicare is a universal program- NOT. Those in "have" provinces have it so much better that those in the "have nots".

I was talking to Lise a little while ago and the waiting list for Dr. B is now six years long and the doctor that was under his tutelage has since decided not go go that route and is no longer with Dr. B and is no longer going to do those surgeries. So it's back to just being Dr. B in the Atlantic provinces.

I am depressed, there is no other way to describe my reaction. This is insanity, Thanks for the information.
