Topic: CMMC Bandsters?? Need info..
Good morning,
I only have a few days left until surgery. YIPPPEEE!!! I was just curious as to what to expect after surgery. How soon are you up walking around? How were you feeling afterwards...once you got hom? How long were you off from work? I'm so excited it's all I can think about. Didn't sleep at all last night and still have a couple of days left! Any responses would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Tonya
Topic: RE: Just wondering how much you were able to drink a few days post-op???
Hey April!
Congrats on making it to the losers bench!
I found that as long as I was sipping and not taking large drinks or gulps, I could get in quite a bit of liquids. Since you are sipping slowly, 2.5 ounces in 15min is very slow, the liquid is going through before you get full. That's the way to do it when you first get home fromt he hospital. I found that I had either a glass of water, broth or a protein drink in my hand at all times. That's ok, do what you have to do to get your protein and water in. Just do it slowly!
Congrats again! Let me know if you need anything, I'm just 20 min away!

Topic: PCOS and Gastric Bypass
Just a quick background on me...
I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 17. I have never had a period on my own and went through 7 years of infertility treatments before we adopted our beautiful son Jack in 2005. Also, I never weighed more than 140lbs in high school.
In August of 2006, I had Gastric Bypass and have since lost 125lbs. At the end of June I went back to my Reporductive Endorcrinologist to have my labs re-done to see if there were any changes.
My testosterone level dropped from 142 to 50. Normal is between 30 and 80. I still had high Estrogen and hi LH levels which is still typical of PCOS. (polycystic ovarian disorder) At that time I went back on Glucophage. (PCOS seems to be caused by high insulin levels and Glucophage is a diabetic medication that helps your body process your insulin better.)
On August 17th of this year, 2 days after my 1 year anniversary of my surgery, my period miraculously appeared on its own. This has never happened in my life. I went to my RE on Monday of this week, they drew a progesterone level, a level over 10 indicates that you ovulated, mine was 14!!!!!
This means that my body ovulated on it's own TWO months in a row! I'm going through puberty at the ripe old age of 42.
However, this means I could possibly get pregnant on my own.
I just wanted to share this, so others out there with infertility issues due to PCOS or just being obese will know that having the surgery and helped me more than I ever thought possible.
Topic: what did you do today?
Today, for me, started out VERY SLOW. I could not get motivated and even crawled back into bed after taking kiddos to school.... I did, however, get out for lunch, then went to Bass Pro Shop for a little shopping and ended up going to the gym this evening. yay! haha. I'm working really hard for cardio these days. I'd really like to lose another 30 pounds, but I'm not sure that will ever happen. Even if I could just muscle up what I've got now.
So, what did I do today? I did the elliptical for 30 mins. and then treadmill for 15 mins. Kept my heartrate in the 150s, though, so definitely cardio workout for me! Housework tonight. haha.
hope everyone's having a good day.

p.s. does anyone have Arlies' phone number? I'd like to check on her.

I definitely think that's why so many physicians and nutritionists recommend measuring EVERYTHING at first. I definitely did. It was only much later that I realized how skewed my view of what a 'portion' size was. When I had WLS the second time around, I had convinced myself that "I really don't eat that much". geez. Maybe I didn't eat often, but I ate way more than a portion worth.
glad to hear you're doing well, though. :)

Thanks so much for your responses.. I didn't get to get back on yesterday, so I didn't get to get back on to update that I had talked to the nurse at my doctor's office and she told Dr. Dolan everything that I was feeling and what I had been eating & he said that I'm doing great.. It's okay to not feel full or satisfied.. As long as I'm not nauseas, vomiting or having dry heaves, I'm fine.. He said I would know if my staple line had been broken.. For me to make sure I follow the diet the Nut. gave me & I would be okay..

I did not get a full feeling at first...I did kind of measure, what looked like 1 ounce after I was advanced to soft foods, and otherwise I just did not want much to eat for a while. I did use a small plate and a small fork for about the first year, still do sometimes to help not overeating. Every doctor is different, mine did not even add protein drinks until after about 4 weeks or maybe 6. BU****er is very important. I was able to drink all the water just by carrying a bottle with me everywhere I went and sipping just almost constantly for the first few months. It got a little harder as I added more foods, there just did not seem to be enough time in the day to get in the food and drink - hard but not impossible - ha.....
So glad you are home and doing well !

Topic: RE: I'm finally post-op!!!!!
Hi April!
I was so glad to hear your surgery went well. I have been following your postings and have read your profile. I have been a "lurker" on OH for years now, lol. It seems so long ago I started my own journey to get my bariatric surgery done. I was in line to have the operation when Katrina hit and blew away the coast (and my plans). It has been 2 years now and I am in line once again.
I also have Dr. Dolan as my surgeon. I saw him before Katrina and then waited for him to get back from Iraq. I was determined that he was going to do my surgery. I just loved him the first time I met with him. It has been an uphill battle all the way. Anything and everything went wrong, but I keep my head up and keep trying. I feel everything happens for a reason and our plans and God's don't always happen to be the same. My faith and my dear husband has brought me through this. I don't know what I would do without either.
I haven't set up a profile or pictures yet. I will get to it. I live in Hattiesburg and my husband is retired Navy. I am 56 and have three grown children and 4 grandchildren, all girls! I love them so much and want to be around for them for a long time. I am diabetic and take 4 shots a day to control my sugar. I have osteoarthritis in my back, knees and hips. i have had both knees replaced and doctors want to redo them again. I am really looking forward to having this surgery as it means I have a second chance to change my life and get back to good health.
It sounds like you made it with flying colors. I hope you continue to do well and I will be praying for you. If there is anything I can do for you, I would be glad to breeze down to the coast. In the meantime, I will be looking for your posts. I enjoy the message board but just haven't posted there. I am sure that will change when I have surgery and have a billion questions to ask everyone, lol. Take care and be well.

it took me about 30-45 minutes to drink 8 oz protein shake. Just sip and if you are going to fast you will know. It will feel like a sharp pain in your chest. Just slow down, Make sure you drink your protein! Just sip your water. It is so important. It changes from week to week as you heal. Hang in there we are all here to help you get through this. Just remeber everyone is different. Talk to you soon.
