New to board
Welcome to the board! Sometimes it's kind of slow here, but usually there is a steady traffic of about 8 or so people.
I'm Tammy and I had Lap Band about 8 weeks ago and am on my way to the Loser's Bench! There are others here who have had the RNY so they could better answer your questions.
Feel free to post anything that crosses your mind.

My doctor recommended the RNY for me because my BMI was way too high. But I tild him that I was terrified of the other procedure. His response was, "But the Lap Band will take a long time to get the weight off." and I answered, "But it took a long time to put it on." And he laughed and said, "Well then Lap Band it is."
Now your situation is not the same as mine. There are many factors that are different between us. But you could always get a 2nd opinion or lose a lot of weight prior to surgery and then revisit the Lap Band possibility with your doctor.
Instead of doing the liquid diet for 2 weeks, I did it for 3 weeks. Because I was supposed to lose between 10 and 20 pounds prior to surgery. And I did awesome for the first week and a half. Then I ate a real meal on my birthday. then after that I had liquid all day, but 1 Lean Cuisine meal at supper. I lost 10 pounds prior to surgery. My surgeon said that I still had a little bit too much extra fat and it made it a little bit more difficult for him, but that my surgery went very well. Dr. Avara is a musician so his dexterity is very good in his fingers.
As for protein powder, I bought a canister of UNJURY protein mix. I bought the unflavored version so I could add it to anything - soups, smoothies, etc. http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/nutrition/a,proddetail/prod_id,2494/ or www.unjury.com. Now I am able to eat real foods, so I eat my foods high in protein 1st and I supplement with Carnation instant breakfast or a Slim Fast if necessary. And I take my vitamins.
Hope this helps.
