BIG MEDICINE
Have yall been watching the tv show "Big Medicine"? I have not missed and episode. I have watched each one two times. I am really toughed by this show. I do like the surgeons and find them compassionate. The psyc people on the staff are out of touch and appear to me to have issues of their own such as prejudice against obese patients. We all have seen people in all walks of life. What do yall think about the show? glenda
i've only caught two episodes---but i do have them recorded, so someday i'll catch up. maybe. haha. i did like the show, but i found the psych lady to be really out-of-touch. Her life story of growing up with an obese mother so she just "decided" that she wouldn't be fat. Well, I don't know of very many obese ppl who 'decided' to be obese...she makes it sound so easy to control.
but overall, i liked what i've seen of the show. :)

Mary if you have no****ched them all trust me Mary Jo the pych. lady gets more annoying to me. I do like the show alot but some of the things on here are just dumb. Like this is a show about obese people but all their equipment is to small like chairs and tables. And this past week with marc. What bonehead sent just two guys to move him and hurt him was just dumb. I am very large like him and there is a way to move us. Let me know when you watch the rest of them what you think.

I think that alot of hospitals are 'dumb' to the obese population--even those who are trying to help. I know River Oaks Hospital is where i had my surgery--and they are ill equipped for patients over 300. They are currently getting more durable equipment because they're in the process of developing a bariatric program, which I think is awesome. They're starting some sessions to teach their staff re: handling (physical *and* emotional) of the obese patient. I hope to eventually become part of their team (as a nurse I think I have alot to offer).
I've worked at lots of hospitals in the jackson area in the past 10 years--and none are really equipped for pts who are 300+ pounds. Most of the beds (even in the OR) max out at that weight. Ironically, we routinely care for patients who are heavier than that....(and when I say care for them--I mean for things other than WLS...but high blood pressure, stroke, broken bones, pneumonia, etc.) I think that WLS programs are just making facilities more aware of the population.
I found it ironic that the OR beds only hold 300 pounds. As a nurse weighing that, I cringed to think that I'd have to have a 'special bed' if i was any heavier....of course, most of my friends never guessed I was but around 220. so I'm sure there are lots of patients who are really heavier than the weight the staff assigns them, unless they were actually weighed on admission (and we know that's a joke).
anyway. just a few thoughts. :)

I watched that for the first time Monday night and it was worth watching. Especially if you want to learn more on the gastric bypass. I was watching the guy the other night that weighed almost 800 pounds and felt so bad for him. By the way why we are on this subject for those who have had the surgery do they use the tube on everyone that is having or just some? I had colon cancer surgery in 12/03 and had a tube run through my nose down to my stomach and was just kind of curious if they do something similar to that on these surgerys.
