I have read where lots of people have been put on liquid diets. I haven't been put on one but was wondering if someone could give me a list of what all you can have and can't have while on this diet? I don't want to sound dumb asking but would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Sonya Mantachie MS

I'm assuming you mean pre-surgery ?  My doc just had me do full liquids like a day or so before surgery, then the do all the bowel cleanse stuff for surgery.... I believe several on here have doctors that put them on like a full liquid diet for 2-4 weeks before surgery - if so, full liquid diet is anything that is liquid at room temperature - broth, yogurts (I think), Jello - sugar free puddings, etc.....Hopefully, some of the ones who have had to be on the liquid diet will answer with what their doctors had them do.... Not a lot of help, but a start anyway - DeAnna

Thanks DeAnna..my surgeon hasn't said anything yet. The only thing that he has said is for me to get the filter put in then he will set my surgery date and that is all that he has said. Sonya Mantachie MS

The reason behind some surgeons choosing a week or longer (mine required a 2 week liquid) is to help shrink the liver.  Obese folks tend to have larger livers--and the liver lays over the stomache...so whether you're being banded or bypassed, they have to get to your stomache and it's alot easier with a smaller liver (and believe it or not just a week or two makes a vast difference in the size). when I was banded 6 years ago, my surgeon didn't require any pre-op diet.  I ate steak the night before surgery... and then he didn't provide any special diet post-op and i ate fruit and salad as my first meal afterwards. so you'll find a variety of diets both pre and post op. :) mary

hey girlie.  things are okay.  recovery from this is SLOW.  very slow.  very very slow.  I figured a week or two and I'd be fine.  It's been two weeks and a day and I'm still pooped.  Went for second check yesterday and everything's fine.  still have some sutures in the thighs that have to stay another week...but no more drains and most of the stitches aregone.  just trying to regain strength and stamina.  and it's so freakin' hot outside that i don't do anything but sit inside. my mom's here helping (thank goodness....else i'd never be able to keep up with Rune). anyway..how're you? :)  thanks for inquiring about me! mary
