I haven't been told that I cannot consume carbonated sodas.  Lately I have read diferring statements/opinions re: the effects of carbonation on the pouch.   Question:  Am I doing harm to myself drinking carbonated sodas???   Thanks for your input/help. BTW, I have lost a total of 97 lbs. since my surgery in December.  I heartedly apologize for being out of touch but I have been monitoring the forum and ALWAYS encouraged by what others share.... I'm on summer vacation but involved in the Boys and Girls Club summer camp presently... I hope to be more 'verbal' soon. Love, prayers and hugs, Wanda Mack

I think if you ask 5 people you'll get five answers.  heh.  50/50 chance that anyone is right.  Different surgeons have different opinions. for me:  when I had the nonadjustable band, I was no longer able to tolerate carbonated sodas (and yes, I tried several times over a two year period).  The bubbles seemed to just keep bubbling and made me hurt--like a heart attack hurt.  Since having the RNY 16 months ago, I have been able to drink diet coke (my true addiction) without any problems.  I don't even have to let it "go flat" as some people will post about.  Now, I don't think it's good for me to drink them, but I do.  I think anything in moderation is acceptable (even if it isn't good for you).  There are lots of things, carbonated beverages included, that can stretch your pouch.  I think anything in large quantities (even water) could do that. just my opinion.  you have to live with whatever you decide...so just make an informed choice. :) mary

Before surgery, I was a diet Coke addict, started the day with one every day.  My surgeon asked that we not drink carbonated drinks for six months after surgery.  I started tapering off about a month before surgery and haven't had a diet Coke or Coke since. I have occasionally had some sprite in a mixed drink but it comes from a fountain so it's not so fizzy.  Or maybe it's the Jack Daniels that takes away some of the fizz!!!
