I knew this day would come..but I'm still amazed.  My job is being eliminated and John is self-employed...so we've been applying for private health insurance.  I've been denied by two companies because of having gastric bypass surgery.  Amazing thing is, though, that had I *not* had bypass, I would've been denied for my height/weight ratio. argh. this is so frustrating.

Some states have insurance policies you can purchase through the state insurance commissioner's office. In Mississippi it's called Mississippi Comprehensive Health Insurance Risk Pool Association

You're right.  I mean, it isn't like we've either *ever* been hospitalized.  We take one prescription medication each.  No diabetes, no stroke, no nothing that requires frequent doctor visits. ..sigh.. i don't understand insurance companies.  i actually filed a complaint with the insurance comission because BCBS wouldn't tell us why we were denied by them.  The second company told us why--because I'd had gastric bypass and John has hypertension (controlled for 2 years).  The second company even denied our 4 year old "because he couldn't be covered without an adult covered".  geez.  kick me while i'm down!

Insurance companies are absolutely ridiculous!  I hate them!  They make no sense!  You can't afford Cobra, and there is a time frame on that anyway right?  But you can't insurance on your own.  They wouldn't cover us because my child has Asthma.  Come on... give me a freakin' break!   I would try some kind of government thing.  I mean, you have to have insurance.  I know a good insurance person if you need one.  She'll get you the best she can get for you, or recommend you to a government agency.  The high risk pool sucks, but it's better than nothing.   She has always been very good to my mom, who has Crohn's disease and is diabetic and my dad was self-employed.  So....  she has experience in this area. Here's hoping you can find SOMETHING!  :-)
