Hello Mississippi Board First off I will introduce myself. My name is Mary Sellers and I am 26 yrs old and I had weight loss surgery Sept 1 2006 and have lost a total of 110 pounds so far. The reason for my post is my DH has possibly found a job in Pascagoula and we are most likely going to be moving in July or August of this year. Don't know for sure tho. But I really need some help on finding a good area to live in with really good schools. I don't want to live to close to the beach maybe 20 or 30 miles away at the most. Also we are buying a mobile home here and if we move I don't know if we can have a mobile home so close to the ocean. So we would have to sell it. We will be renting until we can get settled before buying a house unless we can find a place to move our home we have. So if anyone can give me some advice on areas to live and schools that would be great. Also if you can have mobile homes there. Thanks in advance. Mary

Welcome... First of all, you can have mobile homes down here on the coast, many people do. Renting is not the best option for this area since Katrina. The price of rent is ridiculous. Ocean Springs is a nice area, from what I know. I have lived in Biloxi now for almost six years. My husband in military, so we live near the base. If he is going to be working in Pascagoula, you may want to check out the area of Vancleave, it is more of a rural community, away from the coastline. Also there is Moss Point and Gautier that are close to Pascagoula. I hope this has helped you out some. Once you get here and are in need of a support group, look me up and you can join ours. Take care and good luck! Rhonda

Rhonda, Thank you!! My husband is a engineer on a offshore vessel and now is gone for 28 days and home for 28 days. There is a job there that pays the same as being offshore. And he could be home every night and off on weekends unless there is a oil spill out in the gulf but then he would only be gone for a few days. This is the kind of job he has been trying to find so he can be home. It get's very lonely when he is gone and so we said so we could be together we would move anywhere. It's not but about 5 hours from where I live now and so i am ready to go. But I don't know the requirements for moving a mobile home out of state and if they would let us and what we would have to go through. Also we do want to be away from the coast line but we also want to be in good areas and good schools. I have always dreamt of living near the ocean but since Katrina I am afraid and most defenanty in a mobile home. I don't know about that. But thank you and I will look you up if we move, I sure hope we do but the trouble of finding a buyer so soon and you said the rent is crazy. Do you know how much? We can pay a thousand a month. Surely you can find something nice for that I hope. Please let me know. Thanks Mary

Hi Mary, I live in Gautier, up in the Hickory Hills are just about 4 miles north of I-10. I have very LITTLE damage from Katrina. We had to replace our roof and our fence and that was it. Most of the devastation from Katrina was storm surge and if you were far enough away from the coast, back bay and any rivers that fed into these, you were one of the lucky ones with little damage. Vancleave is a good option to find a piece of land and move your manufactured home there. Also there are a bunch of houses for sale up in the Hickory Hills area where I live. I don't know much about the schools in the area. My son is 19mo and we are planning on home schooling him. I also want to recommend Dr. Avara in Ocean Springs. He did my surgery and would be a good Dr to use for your follow up care. He and his staff are just WONDERFUL! -Pam

Pam, Thank you for the information. I will check that area out. Also you can look up any schools in a city and find out it's stats. Thanls again. Mary

Moving a mobile home across 2 states requires 2 permits. I had somone buy my mobile home to Pickwick which is Tenn, and I was in Ms. and I recall them having a hard time finding a mover with both permits to move the home out of state...it may be more advantageous to sell there and get a new mobile home when you aquire land in Mississippi...good luck you will love Mississippi...good folks and like you said, not far from your home!!

Melanie, I was worried about that. But there was another option we could do and that's to stay in Alabama just closer to the state lines and it wouldn't be far for my husband to drive. But we have a few months before we are doing anything. I just wanted to see if anyone knew if you could have mobile homes near coast lines. I thought there would be a restriction on that. But I wouldn't live near the coast line with a mobile home. So anyways thank you for the information. I don't know what we are going to do just yet as far as the mobile home goes. I thought about selling it and renting a place but someone told me that rent is crazy now since Katrina and so that was my only option. We don't want to buy just yet. Not until we are for sure that is where we are staying. Thank you again for the help. Mary

If schools are important to you then I would check out the Ocean Springs area. I remember when I worked in Pascagoula several years ago before we moved to the Hattiesburg area that everyone said that Ocean Springs had better schools. Also, when I worked in Pascagoula we lived in Alabama in the Theodore area and I just drove 30 minutes to Pascagoula to work. That may be something you could do as well. Good luck with the move and congrats on your weight loss. Melissa

Melissa, Schools are very important. We come from a small town and we love it here but like I said earlier we will move anywhere so he can have a job where he is home every night and home on weekends. Plus I have always wanted to move and explore new area's. I also was thinking about still living in Alabama and Theodore sounds like a good idea. Could you tell me more about that area. It would make it alot easier to move I guess and we wouldn't have to change so much stuff over. Also I am sure we can get our mobile home moved down that way with no problem. Also thank you for responding. Mary

I know what you mean coming from a small town and schools being important. I work in Hattiesburg and my husband works in Beaumont, but we live in Petal because the schools are so good and have top ratings. I drive about 20 minutes to work and he drives about 35, but it works for us because we like small towns. It has been ten years since I lived in the Theodore area, but when I did live there it had a small town atmosphere and nice little schools, but was just a hop, skip and a jump from all the things to do in Mobile. Plus, Hwy 90 was a quick way to get to Pascagoula for me to work without having to live there. We really didn't care for Pascagoula too much as far as living there goes. My husband's step brother lives in Ocean Springs, MS because of the schools. And he drives to Pascagoula to work everyday. I grew up in Alabama. So, I am a bama girl too. I grew up in Monroeville. We moved to Theodore after I finished college in Montgomery. Then we moved on to Mississippi. We have been here about 10 years. We love it here. Everyone is really nice in this area where we are. I do miss Alabama some too, but we visit often as we still have family all over in various areas of Alabama. Melissa
