sorry--i've been away from the boards for a few days...
My origional surgery was done in spring of 2001--Dr. Molina in Houston, TX did the nonadjustable band (that was before the adjustable lap band was approved by the FDA in june of 2001). I lost 160 pounds in under a year and went from 300 pounds to an all time low of 140. that 140 was after the birth of my son. I had hyper-emesis (constant vomiting due to pregnancy) in 2002 and ended up twisting my stomache beneath the band. when my son was 1 month old, I had to have the band removed due to necrosis of my stomache. I was told I could never have any other WLS. Within a year and a half, I had gained all my weight back. I was a size 10 at the all-time low, and a size 28 at the beginning and the end. I had severe post-partum depression that was probably enhanced by the weight gain.
My revision surgery was done by Dr. David Carroll here in Jackson 2/28/06. I went in to the OR unsure if I would come out with a duodenal switch or a roux-en-y. I just knew I needed help. I was self-pay for the 1st surgery, the reversal/removal of the band, and also for the revision. (Insurance wouldn't pay for any of it--saying it was all related). I did not attend a seminar, I did no pre-surgery testing (other than the labs required by anesthesia). I was offered nutritional counseling--but I had alot of that while I was pregnant with the band, so I declined it for the revision. Since Feb. I've lost 110 pounds. I've exceeded my surgeons expectations for a revision surgery.
oh--btw--I ended up with an open roux-en-y and stayed 2 days in the hospital post-op. I was off work two weeks (I'm a nurse) and I haven't missed a beat since then. I eat some of everything (and even sugar in very small quantities) but I have dumped on occasion, and it's usually when I eat too fast or if I get a craving for ice cream (which hasn't happened in months..haha). I'm so very happy right now. very pleased with the path I've chosen...even if it took me spending as much money as I have. I just haven't had a new car in 10 years (hope my honda doesn't let me down now!) and I'm slowly but surely paying everything off. I've already paid off the 1st and 2nd surgery--just working on the last one.
if you'd like to email more--write me @ [email protected]
i try to get on here daily--but don't always make it.
