Self-pay?

 Hi guys, I'm sort of new here. I posted once before under a different name, which I can't remember the login details for, but that's neither here nor there. I digress. I've been looking into WLS now for about 3 years and am finally ready to get on with it. I don't have any insurance, so I'm going to be self-pay. So, my question is... are there any surgeons in the general vicinity (LA, MS, AL) that have extremely reasonable prices, but are still highly competent with good track records? The best I can find so far is Dr. Hargroder in South Louisiana who charges 17,700$ for lap RNY (my surgery of choice). Other than that, I know of Dr. Mark Pleatman in Michigan who has an 11,500$ package. Heck, I've even considered going down to Mexico. I hear the care is excellent. But obviously I'd rather be sort of close to my surgeon for matters of convenience. Money, however, is tight and I gotta do what I gotta do, as they say. So, any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Hey Tara... Check with CMMC in Jackson. I was self-pay as well and they had a nice "promotion" going on. But, I'm not sure if theres one now. The number for them is (601) 376-2474. Their seminars go over all this as well, so you might want to try to attend one. Karine

Hi Tara, Check w/Dr. Avara in Ocean Springs. I used insurance, but at the seminar they said Gastric Bypass was $24K and lap band was $15K I believe. 866-584-5508 -Pam

Hi Tara, I was self pay in the New Orleans area. Surgical Specialists of Louisiana in Covington and Metairie have self pay pricing of $12,000 for lap band and $18,900 for Laproscopic Gastric Bypass. This price is for surgeon fees, hospital, and anesthesiologist fees related to the surgery and 1 year follow-up treatment. They are some of the best Doctors in the south. The number is 985-234-3000. They have regualr seminars with the Dr.'s answering questions and often have former patients there to also answer questions. Patient advocates help with the process and can tell you if there is any hope of your insurance covering the surgery. I am one month post-op for the the bypass and had no complications and not even any pain. My surgeon was Dr. Lavin, but feel that all of the surgeons there are highly qualified. Hope this helps. Lynn
