I have my first appt next Friday - it was supposed to be in late October, but an opening came up. What all do I need to ask, or be prepared for at the first appt? My appt is with Dr Carroll. I've heard that the docs don't all have the same requirements before surgery. Anybody know what Dr Carroll requires - such as tests?

Congratulations Vicky! Dr. Carroll is straight forward and thorough and will explain everything in detail including the pro's and con's of each type of procedure and what would be best for you. As far as I know there are no requirements such as psych. evaluations, etc. If you're worried about what to expect at the first appointment, I would encourage you to call his office. His staff is super friendly and helpful. Take a list of your current medications and if possible 1 pill from each because size matters with a lapband. You might want to ask the following: Will you be able to continue to take your current medications - if not, what meds should be substituted? For example Motrin is not allowed but Mobic is, etc. Anything that can irritate or ulcerate the stomach has to be evaluated. If you can continue to take your current med's, you will need to find out from the pharmacist if they can be halved or crushed. The tighter the fill - the smaller the opening and the harder it is to swallow pills. When does he recommend you return to work post op? How much total weight you can expect to lose and how quickly? Risks of possible complications. Post op diet requirements When you can expect to have your first fill and how much of a fill will it be? How often can you have a fill and what are the increments, ie. .50, .30, etc.? How will you know when you're at the proper fill level? How much do fills and unfills cost? What are the warning signs of when you should have an unfill? This should get you started and I'm sure other questions will arise during your first appointment. Again, congratulations!! Can't wait to welcome you to the other side. Vivian
