Craving a coke!!!!
My doc says it is a myth that carbonated beverages stretch the pouch. My nutritionist said the same thing as long as you wait 4 to 6 months before you drink it giving the pouch plenty of time to heal. Then when you do drink it make sure it is partially flat because the carbonation causes gas pains in some people. I drank my first bit of diet coke at about 6 months out. I drank them flat for a few months. At about a year out I drank one that was not flat. They have never caused me gas pains and they haven't stretched my pouch. I can hold less food than many people who had their surgery after me. It really depends on what doctor you have and what nutritionist you have. There are so many different programs out there and each doctor allows different things at different stages.
You are only a couple months out so I would not drink one yet.

I drank diet coke, and I think I may have an addiction to diet mt dew but I had my first one when I was about five or six months out. They do give me gas something awful!! I feel bloated after I drink them, but it's like cofee to me, I have to have one in the morning. If you do decide to drink one, make sure you drink caffiene free, the caffiene can actually dehydrate you.
I personally, have had to take a break from the cokes because I haven't lost anymore weight in about a week and a half, I was drinking caffienated drinks and I think that is making my body hold on to water.
I love sf koolaid. I don't really like crystal light because to me it has an aftertaste. cherry and fruit punch are the best sf kool aid to me.
The cokes I don't think have stretched my pouch, I can eat about 8oz and I am nine months out, I think that is about normal.
well hope this helped

I was like you. Really craving a drink, but I waited until I was about 6 months plus before I tried it. I let it go flat, and having it over ice dilutes the drink quite a bit. Out of the can or bottle it is too strong still for me. I drink a diet coke about once a week, most of the time, I get ice water, put in slices of lemon and sweeten it with Splenda. Fantastic! No metallic taste! I also drink quite a bit of brewed tea, diluted with water and ice, and with splenda of course. I even take a jar to work with me for lunch.
I have gas pains when I drink straight from the can or bottle.
Now I am over a year out, I still cannot eat very much. I would guess about 6 ounces total at a time. By the way, my big craving was and is coffee. I have it in the morning and sometimes get a frappicino from Starbucks, lite of course!
I have tried to drink Sangria (red wine) at about 9 months out, got sooo sick! Then I did have a glass of white wine with my meal at 1 year out, with no problem. The other day, tried a margarita, big big tummy ache!!!!!!!
Melissa, you are looking great!

You are so right! Being able to go up stairs, and really MOVE makes a world of difference. School year is going fine. This is my last year here, and I am looking forward to the end of my time. I may work when I get home to MS. if I can get the kind of position that I want, otherwise, I will just stay home for a while and enjoy life!

Hey Karine,
I am almost a year out & still have not had a sip of any type "cokes". I simply refuse to drink one. I'm not saying that you shouldn't drink one. I'm not being mean, ugly, attacking you, etc. This is just another way it should be looked at before you make your choies.
If your only a month or so out- why would you want to open the door to what could be a big mistake. At least I see it as tho it would be a mistake if I did it.
Before I had surgery, I thought I had to have a coke in my hands all the time. Never mind the fact it was a big reason for my being fat to begin with. I know what my reasons were for being fat. Cokes, snacks, junk, fast food, etc. Every one of those great tasting things made me FAT. So, since all of those great things made me so FAT that I had to have WLS, I refuse to let them get a strong hold on me after WLS. But that is just me, my thinking, my humble opinion, etc.
I drink a lot of the sf Kool-aids, etc. It gives you a wide selection to choose from. That way I don't feel trapped to just a few select drinks.
Everyone is different before & after surgery. Some get sick with certain things, while others have no problems. I feel like you should do or try what you want to do & what you feel is the best thing for you to do in order to make WLS work for you.
Best of Luck with your choices, Tammy
