Hello everyone, I am in need of the lap- band surgery but have made no progress in getting a surgeon or financing. I have two kids and am single and I am 31 with a form of muscular dystrophy that is progressive. I can not exercise or walk for long periods because of this. I waas cursed with this from my father and obesity from my mother. I am a law student but am on disability because I can not work. My weight is 230 and I am 5'7. This is about 75-100 pounds overweight according to my doctor. This would not be so very bad if it did not affect my muscle problem as much. I am on medicaid and have been told they do not cover it, but I have read some stories of approval. Please help me find a doctor and a way to get help with financing this surgery. Toni

Bless your heart!!! Financial assistance is problem we have all dealt with. I would suggest your DR. speak w someone at University hospital to see if there was some kind of program or grant due to your condition . I would also contact the MD foundation for advice. Welcome to the board. glenda

Hi toni,so sorry to hear of your illness. I do know the university did offer financial assistance, probably still does. This is a # you May be able to call and have them send you an application. 1-866-842-4640, if this isn't the right # they should be able to direct you to it. Dr. Salameh does do lap bands, but I must warn you, it is a process you have to go thru. The financial dept. Will tell you what they require to qualify for help. I wish you the best of luck

Thank you very much. I called and got directed to the department who handles all of that. They are sending me an application. You are right i met the initial string of questions from the financial department. My muscular dystrophy doctor is in the same medical mall as Dr. Salemah. He said he would forward his recommendation to Dr. Salemah. This will be a long process I'm sure but I just feel it will be worth it. Have you had the surgery? Was it all that you hoped it would be? yes, i have had lap rny. it really was worth it to me. i feel so much better, more energy. no sugar problems, bp or sleep apnea. i've lost 56 lbs since surgery. i don't know much about the lap band, but when dr. salameh explained it to me, i just didn't feel i would have the time to go there and get it checked or filled or whatever they have to do. it does keep you from being opened up or having major surgery. but just try to get thru all the "hoop jumping" be patient, and it will happen if it is the lord's will. keep us informed. brenda
