Welcome to the MS board. We are a friendly bunch.
I can't help you about Starkville but I love to visit Louisville which is 25-30 miles away from Starkville. I love Lake Tia Khata (spelling?) motel/ camp.

I live outside of Starkville. Home of Mississippi State University. It is a middle size town with a small town atmosphere trying to become bigger everyday. There are some very good subdivisions around Starkville. Real Estate is higher there than where I live but I geuss that is expected in a college town. I owned a bail bond business for years there and I can tell you that crime is not that bad. If you have children though the school system is bad. There is a private school there that is very reasonable though. There are a lot of things to do there now as far as entertainment and dining. I'm not sure what you are wanting to Know but if you tell me I can try to get the information for you.

I love this town, but there are a few set backs. The traffic while school is in session is pretty bad. They just built this nice bypass, which all the trucks use, but the cars don't tend to take it. So the congestion on Hwy. 12 is scary.
There's a skating rink, which is fun for all ages. My hubby and I go there sometimes, just to be like kids again. There's a bowling alley, with a nice little deli in it. They have something called Midnight Bowling, where they cut on all these black light and everything glows. That's fun too. Plus, campus is always having activities for students and the public. Everything from musical entertainment to plays and speakers.
Now the real estate is higher because it's a college town. Most rental properties are outrageous because they're trying to make money off the college kids. So a typical $300 apartment is $600 here. The housing is expensive too. In most of the communities, an average, small 3 bedroom, 1 bath house built in 1970 is $95,000. So if you are interested in buying a house, it might be better to go outside city limits and look. We own our own trailer and park it in the nicest Mobile Home Community we could find here. It's called Montgomery Quarters, and it's about 10 miles outside of town. Nice and quiet.

Like Arlies, I don't know much about that area either (live in Jackson/Brandon area), but wanted to say welcome "on board".
My son just started going to State this year, got an appartment in Starkville, 2 bedroom, with a nice townhouse feel - upstairs and downstairs, rent is about $600, and it is mostly college kids but a very nice appartment complex. That's all I know about the area at all...
We lived in Senatobia, MS for about 2-3 years and REALLY REALLY loved it there...
