Help on WLS speech...I can count on my MS FAMILY!
Hello everyone-
I have a speak in my health class either tomorrow or thursday about my WLS. I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT TO SAY OR WHERE TO START! PLEASE HELP W/ANY IDEAS! Its strictly my choice to do it. No grade. So if you help it won't be cheating. I am doing this to let ppl know its not wrong to have the surgery if your morbidly obese its ok! I wanna tell about the eating plans and the changes that have happened. Like being more active and all. The size of the pouch and how it was done, well not in great detail, but can't put it into words! HELP! Thanks everyone!
If you have always wanted to let ppl know a certain thing about the surgery I can in the speech I will be giving lol well its more like a lecture.
This took a lot for me to wanna do bc I was always feared of being judged. Now I am not. Thanks all!

I would not go in there telling people its not wrong to have this surgery... That is a very personal decision and for some people it is wrong.
I would tell them your own experience and what it has done for you and how you have handled it. What impact it has had on your life....
I believe all doctors make their pouches different in sizes so you may want to ask your surgeon what size yours is. I have no idea what size mine is.
I think the best way to go about a lecture on WLS is to be really fact oriented about the procedure and how it works and not so much whether it is right or wrong because that really depends on the person. WLS is not the answer for everyone who is overweight as it takes dedication and a life long commitment and some people are not up to the task. I think it is very important to stress that it is not a cure for obesity but a tool that if respected and used correctly can make dealing with obesity much easier. I think it should be stressed to anyone contemplating WLS the emotional journey that it is due to food addictions and obsessive compulsive behaviors many obese people have. The surgery is on the stomach not the brain. And people should get the therapy they need to deal with their food issues in conjunction with the surgery so as to maximize their chance for longer term success at keeping the weight off.
Good luck with your lecture.

The more personal you make it, the better the speech will be....
I would start with a bit of "weighty" history - when you started gaining weight, the attempts you made to lose, and what "drove" you to consider the WLS. Then I would draw a diagram on the board of a "normal" tummy and intestines and then draw a picture of what it looks like after the bypass. I would then talk about some of the side effects or problems with the procedure. I would end with more personal about how well you've done and what your weight loss has been and what problems you have encountered.....Hope that'll help....And YES it's not for everyone!!!! But I would stress that if someone chooses WLS they need support not negativity!
