Lisa, Hear that all the time. It's like you never hear about the Million people who flew on airlines Without problems, You hear about the 4 that flew into the side Of a mountain in a freak accident. What's that old thing?... "Dog Bites Man!" Is not worth mentioning, But- "Man Bites Dog!" is a Headline!?! And NOT that it doesn't Happen! I'm sure there's a guy somewhere Nibbling on a Pooch! Blow it off and move on in success! Hopefully they'll think YOU are the Special One Who "Beat The Odds!" Best Wishes- Dx

RNY Gastric bypass is not to be reversed. If for some reason it has to be (and I would think that would be very, very unlikely), you would gain the weight back. I have heard that the reversal surgery is much, much more complicated and filled with alot of problems and more often fatal....that is all hearsay, but it makes sense to me. Yes you can gain the wieght back, but if you follow the rules the chance of you gaining all and then some is not likely at all. Most people will rebound and gain 20 to 30 lbs after a few years, but that is not in stone either! Don't worry ahead! Stick to your rules and be sensible....there are alot of little boys out there that cry wolf.... Smoochies Arlies PS also research show that if you stick with a support group (that'd be us) your chances of gaining weight back are about zip....

Actually, I personally know someone that had the RNY & she gained back every bit of the weight that she had lost & she admits that it was her fault. She had elbow problems. It kept bending every time she picked up a fork. She didn't know how or when to say no. She thought that by having WLS it was a for sure thing that she was on her way to being skinny & healthy with no effort on her part. I don't think that it isn't uncommon for this to happen. It's just one of those things you hardly ever hear about, unless it being said as though "I know somebody who knows somebody". Then you wonder if it is true or is it someone just knocking those who have had WLS. My personal thoughts tho.... I wouldn't be a bit surprised if certain companies & doctors who make money off of WLS & products try to cover up the failure rate. They don't want the info of "people do fail even with WLS" out there. It cuts into their profits. "Over Weight" shoppers have billions to spend & these companies & doctors will do anything to get their share & more of the money. Plus not too many people would own up to having WLS & being a failure at it. Can you imagine the humiliation ??? That would be an awful thing to live with every day. I think thats one of the reasons we always hear it as though "I know somebody...." Tammy

LISA NOT EVERYONE GAINS THEIR WEIGHT BACK BUT I AM A CANIDATE FOR WEIGHT GAIN AFTER THE RNY. I HAD MY GASTRIC BYPASS IN MARCH 2001. I WEIGHED IN THE DAY OF SURGERY AT 276 AND HAD LOST DOWN TO 176 OR A FEW POUNDS LOWER. NOW I AM UP TO 216. ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO I WOULD HAVE PROBLY ARGUE WITH SOME ONE IF THEY WOULD HAVE EVEN MENTIONED WEIGHT GAIN. I AM GAINING WEIGHT SO FAST THAT I DON'T CARE WHAT TYPE OF DIET I GO ON I AM STILL GAINING. I HAVE SPOKE TO 6 OTHER PEOPLE THAT HAD THE SAME SURGERY IN 2001 THAT HAS GAIN BACK SOME OR EVEN ALL OF THEIR WEIGHT BACK. YOU NEED TO READ SOME OF THE COMMENTS ON THE REVISION PAGE. I remember the doctor telling me that there are rare cases (a small percentage) where even after Gastric By-pass they do not lose weight or only a tiny fraction of the weight. They do not know why this happens, or if the body just becomes more efficient in utilizing nutrients or the colon takes over the process and becomes super absorbative. I asked him what could be done in this case, and he told me nothing. They cannot take out lengths of colon, it is dangerous, and may cause the person to literally starve to death. I did meet a girl who had gained back most of her weight, after the dumping syndrome wore off, and she had married, she did not follow the diet anymore, ate what ever she wanted and put back on a substantial amount of the lost weight. My understanding of Gastric by-pass is that you can never regress to your old eating habits, you cannot eat sugar anymore, and you have to keep moving and exercising to keep your weight normal. Now, small portions look more normal to me, and before surgery, I had dumping problems related to the amount of sugar I was eating. Now, no problem, and Splenda satisfies my sweet tooth. I hope that it will be that way for me for the rest of my life. Still have problems with protein however, maybe will have to eat more beef to keep up the protein levels.......
