Sensible snacks
I thought some of you might be needing to have some snacks to take along with you on road trips or to work, so thought I might suggest some that work for me....
V-8 juice in the small can is 30 calories and the large bottle is 65 calories. It really gets rid of the hungries or if you cannot go to lunch right away, it is a good substitute. (full of vitamins too!) Tomato juice is good too if you do not like V-8. You can usually find it in the service station shops too....
Plain Soda (not saltine) crackers. No salt and they are less calories than sliced bread. Also less than some of the snack bars and they do the trick when having a hot cup of tea for a midmorning break. Eat only 2 or 3.
One piece of 12 grain bread with peanut butter. Small calories but it is good for staving off the hungries or breakfast on the run.
Small pieces of Cheese, or string cheese. You feel full but the calories are small and you get some protein you need on your daily count.
Beef jerky, or Turkey jerky, as long as not processed with sugar. The sodium is high in this snack though.
The small mandarin oranges, the pulp is very tender and the size is good for taking along a few as a snack. The natural sugar is ok too, no upset for most people. Grapes are a no-no, loaded with sugar!!!!
I take along packets of Splenda in my bag. If I go for coffee, I ask them to use the low cal flavoring, or if they do not have it, I ask them if they will use my splenda when they blend the coffee. It works great. This also goes for fresh juice bars too. I like Kiwi juice but sometimes it is too tart without the Splenda so they blend it in, no problem....
Sometimes I order Lemon Iced Tea. They serve the sweetner (liquid sugar) on the side so I just sweeten it with my Splenda and it works great!
I find carrots, celery, and some other veggies are too woody and I feel uncomfortable when I eat them. I do like peanuts in the shell and they are easily obtained most places here in China. Strawberries are a good choice for snacks, they can be eaten with Splenda and have lots of vitamins not to mention free radicals when eaten raw.... Strawberries will be in season soon in MS!!!
If you are going overseas, be aware that most places they do not offer any kind of sweetner other than Sugar. Especially in Asia and a lot of places in Europe.
Most of these snacks are highly portable, I also freeze bottles of drinking water, and then have them as they thaw on the plane since is sometimes is hard to get a drink when you need it. It also keeps your snacks cold, I bought one of those cute lunch kits from Wal-Mart, the perfect take along for snacks.....
Maybe some of you can offer suggestions for take-alongs or things you can buy for some of us who always seem to be on the road.....
Smiles,
Cheryl
